Why I Get Dressed for My Day & What I Wore

Happy Friday! It’s a scorcher here in Cincinnati! So today I’m staying inside as much as possible. But I’ll still get dressed for my day. Putting together an outfit, applying a little makeup and doing my hair just helps me to be more productive and to feel better about myself and life in general. What about you? And today, as usual on Fridays, I’m sharing the outfits I’ve been wearing in “real life” this past week.

How This Works

These are my real life outfits from my own closet. Many of these things are available, but some may not be. When I can locate one quickly I’ll share substitutes and/or more economical options. But if I don’t provide one and you’d like for me to, just ask.

All available items are linked in the captions of the photos. Even if they don’t look like links (sometimes they don’t highlight for some reason), they generally are. So just click through if you’re interested.

What I Wore on Friday

Friday I did something I hadn’t done in a while: I went to see a movie in the theater by myself. Neither of the two friends I’d invited could go, and I just really needed to get out for a little enjoyable time. Sure, James would have gone with me if I’d insisted. But I honestly don’t mind going to the movie theater alone. I saw The Miracle Club and it was sweet and lovely.

So I got dressed up a little with this comfortable, sharp black and white stripe v-neck A-line dress and sandals. Since I knew it might be chilly in the theater I took along my white linen blend wrap (Similar). It definitely came in handy! I had a lovely time at the movies and then strolled through the little town where I’d seen it a bit. I think it’s important to enjoy our own company. What do you think?

Fit Notes: I always size down at J.Jill. So I’m wearing a Small in the dress.

What I Wore on Saturday

Saturday I just stayed home and got things done around the house. I definitely took some time to rest, too. In fact, I think I remember folding clothes on the sofa and then lying down for a little cat nap afterwards. Ha! But I still got dressed for my day.

When I’m spending a day just doing things around the house and resting from the week’s work, I can get a little melancholy if I’m not careful. I find that getting dressed for the day helps to ward off those self-pitying emotions. What do you think?

What I Wore on Sunday

Sunday we celebrated a birthday at church. I kept it casual, but also dressed for a photo shoot after the service. We often stop at a favorite little photo op place between church and home for a quick shoot on Sunday afternoons.

Look Polished in Casual OUtfits
Tee // Black Pants // Belt (Similar) // Straw Tote // Sandals and Here // Earrings // Bracelet

On this day I wore my black wide leg pants from Anthropologie (so comfortable!) with a new graphic tee from Talbots. Hopefully you saw the resulting blog post here about ways to look polished and put together even in casual summer outfits.

Fit Notes: By the way, I recently tried those pants on in the store in a different color and discovered that I probably should have sized down to a 29 in them. These pants have a lot of stretch, so they’re very forgiving. The 30 is working fine for me, but the 29s fit great and would probably look just a little slimmer on me.

What I Wore on Monday

Monday I got out for a nail appointment and a little “research” for work at the mall. Yeah, that’s what I call it! It was a warm day, so I wore my linen cropped length trousers from Talbots (last year – similar) with a white ribbed tank and my linen shirt.

Short Sleeve Button Up (Similar Alternative) // my Tanksimilar Tank // similar Linen Pants // Tory Burch Sandals // Purse // Earrings // Necklace // Bracelet

One of the biggest wardrobe lessons I learned years ago is that there’s no need to save our most special pieces to wear for some “special occasion,” which rarely comes anyhow. It takes no more effort or cost to launder this outfit than it would jean shorts and a t-shirt. And this mostly linen outfit felt so cool and comfortable on this hot day.

What I Wore on Tuesday

Tuesday we shot videos. On video shoot days I sometimes never really “land” in one outfit. On this particular day I was in and out of at least eight outfits. By the time I get through with videos, I generally just want to put my pajamas back on and call it a day. Clothes just feel uncomfortable and icky by that point. Ha!

Top (Similar in short sleeve and on sale) // Blazer // White Jeans // Sneakers (use code KAY20 for 20% off) (Similar) // Earrings // Necklace // Bracelet

But on this day, since we finished shooting fairly early and I still had work to do, I kept on the last outfit I’d worn for next week’s video. Besides this white and blue outfit felt classy and sharp, helping me to be more productive at my desk.

Fit Notes: That 3/4 length sleeve top (also available in black and white) runs a bit large. I sized down to a small. The blazer runs oversized by design; I’m wearing an 8. The sneakers are by Calla Shoes and are designed to be wide in the toe box and standard width in the heel. Use code KAY20 for 20% off at Calla Shoes. They are also very comfortable inside with a 2″ platform. I’m wearing an 8 in the Jeans.

What I Wore on Wednesday

Wednesday we actually shot even more videos. Ha! I shot these for YouTube shorts and LTK posts, so they were just brief outfit videos. We shot 21 of them!!! I was exhausted. But I actually wore this combination of chinos and black ribbed tee before we started the video shoot. I had several meetings that morning and needed to feel and look a little professional.

Black Top // Chinos // Sandals // Earrings // Necklace

Plus I just wanted to pull chinos out and wear them. I wore them a lot in the spring, but kind of forgot how much I enjoy them and hadn’t worn them much this summer. They’re lightweight and very on trend. And I just noticed they have some new colors, too.

Fit Notes: I sized up in the black tee and I’m wearing my usual size 30 for a very comfortable fit in the chinos.

What I Wore on Thursday

Thursday was a scorcher and I considered going lighter. But I just had a hankering to wear a button-up shirt. Does that ever happen to you? Ha! AND I’d been wanting to wear my black Bristol pants from Talbots again, too. So I just went for it. I was out and about at an outdoor mall, and surprisingly I never broke a sweat. This button-up shirt is so lightweight and kept me super cool. Plus, I got lots of compliments on this little duo.

Button-Up Shirt (more economical option) // Pants // Belt // Purse (Similar Alternative) // Sandals // Earrings // Necklace

To create that interesting little tuck I just left the bottom two buttons undone, inserted the button side of the bottom of the shirt crossways into my waistband first and then inserted the buttonhole side crossways. I left the back untucked but rolled up within itself a bit. It looked very neat and tidy in the back, but covered the back of my belt. Also, I just love the combination of black and blue. What about you?

Fit Notes: I wear a medium in that Joedy button-up shirt and my usual size 8 (for Talbots) in the Bristol pants. The shoes fit very comfortably TTS.

That’s a wrap! Thank you so much for stopping in.

Blessed for My Day

If God has called you to it, don’t quit. You may be feeling a little weary from the labor or a little discouraged from the seeming lack of fruit. But if God has assigned you a mission, move forward.

Perhaps you’ve been praying about something that God put on your heart, but see no results. Press on. You have no idea the progress that has been made. Or maybe you have felt God call you to minister to a particularly difficult person and you see no gratitude or progress. Keep on serving. You are undoubtedly making more of an impression than you know. Or maybe God has called you to serve Him in a capacity that seems far beyond your capability. Stay at it. God will provide the results in His time if you continue to plant the seeds He’s put in your hands. Press on, dear one. Your labor is not in vain.

I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. ~ Philippians 3:14

xoxo, Kay

  1. Miss Kay, you are always so pulled together! I struggle with putting on my better outfits for laundry and cleaning at home. I am afraid of ruining them. I do match up my old tees and shorts or jeans, though, no mismatch here. Just a little worn sometimes.

I LOVE the light blue and black on you! There is just something so classy about a light blue button down shirt with a neat true black on the bottom. I think you can even pull off a less current style and still look so chic and fresh with this color combo.

    1. Hi Lori, I just wanted to let you know that I didn’t actually do any cleaning in my outfit on Saturday, just things like laundry, changing bedding and tidying up. Actually, I generally clean in either my workout clothes or pajamas and then wash them. 😉

  2. I also wore a button up shirt yesterday in the blazing heat! Because my shirt was oversized and I left it untucked over a sports bra, it billowed around like sails and kept me soooo cool! My 100 percent cotton Levi’s were a bit on the thick side but I will definitely keep the floaty shirt idea in rotation.

  3. I too get dressed for my day everyday I feel it also makes you more productive and feel better about yourself. Even if I just put on a little makeup and do my hair And I’m just wearing very casual clothes I still feel put together I in particular like your Friday and Tuesday outfits. I really like white and blue together I think you look really sharp! I also really liked the BFMD. I like the chapter of Philippians From the bible There is so much wise advise there. Have a blessed day

  4. Love your outfits, especially the one with the navy and white stripe tee and the one with the light blue shirt and black pants. The tuck looks so cool!
I am glad you went to the movie on your own. We miss out if we always wait on other people to be ready. So do things on your own sometimes! I have also started wearing better looking clothes for everyday. When you save your clothes for a special occasion, they might be out of style when the occasion come up, you may have gained or lost weight, or something else, and you just miss out on enjoying clothes that you have spent your hard earned money on. So try not to miss out!

  5. I love all the outfits. I also go to movies alone every now and then. I enjoy the time with no one to please but myself.

  6. You look great in the he blue shirt and black pants outfit. I keep my house at 78 degrees and I can only tolerate tank tops and shorts. I do wear my nicer clothes just to go to the grocery store or shopping. I just can’t wear anything made of polyester in summer. I like what you say about wearing your clothes because that special occasion may not come. I do think we have to have a wedding or funeral outfit available.
