Scripture Meditation & Memory at DFMD 2023

I hate to admit it, but sometimes I let little frustrations build up until I just get really short with people. I become impatient and intolerant of little quirks or mistakes people make. I’ve found that happening a lot lately. And I feel the need to address this tendency with encouragement from God’s Word.

I know Jesus could have grown impatient with the people around Him. His disciples seemed a little thick headed at times. And the religious leaders who kept trying to trap Him in something certainly would have provoked me. But Jesus didn’t respond sinfully to people’s humanity. He did correct them when their thinking was faulty. But He always showed such patience, gentleness and genuine love, even when the people around Him continued to make the same mistakes over and over.

So I’ve searched the scriptures for something to direct me in how to respond to others with more gentleness and patience rather than getting so easily frustrated. And I’ve landed on Philippians 4:4-5. Here Paul encourages the believers in Philippi to “let {their} gentle spirit be known to all people.” But he sandwiches this imperative between another directive and a beautiful reminder that I think are the keys.

If I choose to rejoice in the Lord and remember that He is near, I will be much more prone to be gentle towards other humans. Christ’s goodness, nearness and holiness reminds me that I have certainly required much grace and gentleness from Him. And if I have received such grace and gentleness, surely I must mete it out as well.

  6. This quote suits me to a tee. So often I cannot hold my tongue and vent my frustration. I have no self control at times. No matter how hard I try to overcome this and be kind to everyone I find myself failing over and over again. I am going to try hard to memorize this quote.

I was looking for something to address what seems like hurtful talk being thrown at us from every angle, I realized that in pointing a finger at them . . . three fingers are pointing back at me and maybe I need to start with myself first.

    this is another translation from the NCV. They are very similar but I love the wording of the last phrase in this version:
    I will praise you every day; I will praise your name forever and ever. The Lord is great and worthy of our praise; no one can understand how great he is.

    I had another verse in mind but I have decided to join Kay in memorizing Philippians 4: 4-5. I was especially challenged by the Amplified version of this verse.

    This is a verse that I have read and heard thousands of times in my life but I wanted to add it to my memorization verses that I recite everyday. Sometimes I let the negative voice in my head tell me that I can’t do it or I’m not good enough. This verse tells me that I CAN do all things through the strength that Jesus gives me.

As you may know, my province and the Northwest Territories are also suffering terribly from forest fires /wildfires. Countless hundreds of thousands of hectares/acres of forests devastated, thousands of families evacuated, tremendous loss of property and businesses. Your prayers would be most humbly and gratefully received. To that point, I have chosen Psalm 46:1–3, 10 for today.

    I am setting a goal for myself to try and live more simply and to stop bringing stuff into my home in the way of clothing, decor, and other unnecessary items. I would like to declutter/pare down, live more intentionally, and put some of that extra money towards helping others instead, such as more charitable donations than I am currently giving. Plus, having too much around means spending valuable time maintaining and organizing all those things. By saving that time, there is more time to devote to the Lord and even to some extra self-care for me. It’s a work in progress, but hopefully this week’s meditation will help me stay focused on my goal and what matters most.

      1. Jan, thank you for commenting. You are right in how challenging it can be. I’ll say a prayer that we both have success in making small intentional changes to live more simply and intentionally. On a light note, it’s so easy to hit that “Place Order Now” button my screen and know that in just a few days I’ll be excited to see that big brown box truck pull up to my house and leave something pretty on my front porch! 🙂

    I have been reading in 1 John lately and want to meditate on some of the verses in Chapter 1.
    This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 1 John 1: 5 & 6 (ESV)
    This has caused me to be praying and seeking him to reveal places that may not be as obvious as other ones where sin has been creeping in, so I can admit it and ask for forgiveness. I want my fellowship with him to be living and truthful… to walk in his light, not holding on to sins and idols that would keep me from fellowshipping humbly with him.

  62. Sundays are full days for me and my favorite day of the week! SW Florida has had rising inflation since Hurricane Ian and we are moving this weekend to lower our taxes etc so I needed a word to bring peace and organization with many details. Psalm 90:12 “So teach us to number our days that we may get us a heart of wisdom.”

  72. We are studying in Colossians in church. My verse this week is from chapter 3 v17: And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. NIV. Our pastor wrote the whole book as a letter, which it is, without chapter and verse so we could view it as the people in Paul’s day would have experienced it. He also encouraged memorization.

  76. I volunteer at a faith-based non-profit that helps women with unplanned pregnancies – to either parent or to make an adoption plan. Sometimes I get discouraged by what I see and I just want to quit. I’m trying to remember to focus on God and to do my work for Him and His glory.

  89. In studying Proverbs, I’ve found myself reflecting on the things that God hates, & the 7 that are an abomination to Him. As I have reflected on these I understand better why these are so bad.

    There are 6 things the LORD hates, 7 that are detestable to Him:
    Haughty eyes
    A lying tongue
    Hands that shed innocent blood
    A heart that devises wicked schemes
    Feet that are quick to rush into evil
    A false witness who’s pours out lies
    And a person who stirs up conflict in the community

    Please pray for my daughter’s dear friend. She just learned her unborn baby boy has Skeletal Dysplasia. Tomorrow she will learn what kind. She is 30 weeks pregnant and as all of us would, I know she will feel your prayers. I don’t have her permission to reveal her name as I haven’t even asked her. Thank you in advance for so many prayers of hope, great faith, and of course the best outcome possible for her sweet baby boy. They have known for awhile something was concerning and she has tried every measure to protect him. He is so very loved Pray for God’s great gift of peace as they go forward.

  93. I just loved how so many different scriptures were cited on the same topic. I think we all know the feeling of feeling short with people, and may we fill in our thoughts with some of this week’s scriptures when we are tempted to be short-tempered with someone.
