It’s about this time in a season when I begin to realize that it won’t last forever. Ha! Seasons come and go. And while we definitely still have a lot of summer days ahead of us – Lord willing – I’m beginning to think about those sometimes tricky transition-to-fall weeks. Anything I add to my closet from this time forward has to be something I can wear now and wear later. The easy breezy dress I’m sharing today fits the bill and then some!

My Jude Connally Libby dress is the same silhouette as one of the dresses I wore in this post about three distinctly summer dresses from the brand. But this new ditsy print comprised of loden green, deep purple and ivory is perfect to wear now and wear later into the fall.

The Libby dress is made of silky soft Jude fabric, which is the perfect weight and has such a beautiful drape. It features a flattering tiered silhouette, short sleeves with a subtle puff and feminine flounce details. I especially love the just-below-the-knee midi length of this popular dress. The Libby runs true to size and I wear a medium, as I have in all of the Jude Connally dresses I’ve tried. Don’t you think it’s a great option to wear now and wear later?

COUPON CODE: Use can always use code KAY15 for 15% off at Jude Connally. Yay for brands that help support what I do here! Today’s blog post was not sponsored, but Jude Connally did gift me the dress so I could share it with you.
I actually wore this outfit to church this past Sunday, and we snapped the photos right afterwards. While you could certainly wear the darker hued Libby dress with sandals for a more summery look, I wanted to take it for a spin in this transition-to-fall styled outfit.

For this “wear later” look, I wore the Libby dress with my Ally Shoes silver metallic slingback kitten heels. Silver is so on trend this year, especially in shoes. And I think the combination really works when I add my denim jacket to the mix. Of course, my Ally Shoes silver kitten heels are so very comfortable. Ally is my go-to brand for comfortable, classic heels. Yes, I’ve been gifted a number of pairs, but I’ve also purchased from Ally, including my daughter’s wedding shoes.

COUPON CODE: At Ally shoes, use code KAYHEELS for $40 off your first pair of heels, KAYFLATS for 10% off your first pair of flats and KAYBOOTS for $50 off your first pair of boots. And yes, you can use all three codes in different purchases. Thanks to Ally for gifting me these shoes to share with you.
My L’Agence Janelle raw cut slim denim jacket was a splurge. But I guess since I’ve worn the same Levi’s denim jacket for over 30 years, I was due a new and more modern one. (Psst! Don’t worry. That Levi’s jacket isn’t going anywhere! It’s a classic.) I love the slim fit of this jacket specifically for wearing with dresses. A good denim jacket is a key to many a wear now and wear later outfit.

I added a couple of pieces of fine jewelry and called it a day. I’m wearing a Bony Levy necklace (no longer available) that was a gift from my husband along with my Penelope jewelry Maya hoop earrings. Personally I’m thrilled that right now the prevailing trend in jewelry is to wear a few well-chosen pieces of finer jewelry rather than costume statement pieces. But that doesn’t mean your jewelry has to be expensive. Check out Ana Luisa jewelry for some beautiful jewelry at great prices.
COUPON CODE: You can always use code KAY20 at Penelope Jewelry, a fine jewelry line created by Rachel, the daughter of one of our DFMD readers. I love supporting this young woman’s business and you will, too.

At the last minute I grabbed my ivory Aimee Kestenberg day dream satchel. I think it was a smart choice, balancing the silver shoes and adding a little light to the darker hued dress. I’ve really enjoyed this glove-tanned leather satchel, gifted to me last year by Aimee Kestenberg. And it’s marked down now and still available. Ivory leather – in shoes and handbags – is so on trend.
COUPON CODE: My sunglasses are by Patricia Nash Designs. You can use code KAY10 at Patricia Nash Designs for 10% off their beautiful handbags and everything else, too.

Wrapping up this wear now and wear later post, it occurs to me that almost everything I’m wearing is from a woman-owned, woman-created business. From my Jude Connally dress to my Ally kitten heels, from my Aimee Kestenberg bag to my Penelope earrings and my Patricia Nash sunglasses, I’ve shared with you unique and beautiful selections created by women for women, and they’re all based here in the United States. I love supporting their businesses. And I want to express to you how much I appreciate you supporting mine. Just by being here, you are helping me to keep the lights on…here and in my home! Thank you. Truly.

By the way, I know that most everything in this wear now and wear later outfit is a little pricey. But we’ve created a Kay’s Look for Less that is much more budget friendly. It features the same dress but in a sale print, and everything else in the outfit is truly perfection. Check it out HERE. Would you like to see more wear now and wear later outfits as we move toward fall? Let me know in the comments.
Blessed for My Day
Have you ever been in a situation where things were going pretty well until someone who just couldn’t stand to see you succeed (or be happy or have hope or move forward, etc.) decided to rain on your parade? What’s with that? Why are some people just so mean-spirited? It’s a mystery to me. But it’s a fact of life in this broken world.
Here are a few things to do or keep in mind when that happens. 1) God knows. Trust Him to handle the matter rather than take revenge or even the score. 2) Don’t let someone else steal your happy. Choose to praise the Lord and move on. 3) Stay focused on what is true and avoid speculations or second-guessing. 4) Refuse to be intimidated or fearful because of threats. Cling to the Lord and press forward.
Now when the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the people of the exile were building a temple to the Lord God of Israel, they approached Zerubbabel and the heads of fathers’ households, and said to them, “Let us build with you, for we, like you, seek your God; and we have been sacrificing to Him since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assyria, who brought us up here.” But Zerubbabel and Jeshua and the rest of the heads of fathers’ households of Israel said to them, “You have nothing in common with us in building a house to our God; but we ourselves will together build to the Lord God of Israel, as King Cyrus, the king of Persia has commanded us.” ~ Ezra 4:1-3

Thank you for reminding me that God Knows. My situation is different but it still helps.
I saw your silver shoes-made me remember in the 70’s, that my mom had some like that^heels, not open backed but tey were patent leather, pale yellow. Wore them with a silky, pale yellow dress. she was pretty in that. Thanks for the memory, she died in May. Missing her today.
I would appreciate seeing more wear now and wear later options. Thank you for helping us plan ahead.
Feel exactly the same about the about-to-be transition. Looking forward to it.
My question/comment is this. You refer to investment purchases, but frayed hems, pant and jean silhouettes change. When I splurge, I do it with the understanding that this may not last, but. I’ll enjoy for a bit. Seems like every style gets tweaked. Coats and blazers, plain cashmere sweaters may remain more acceptable. Just a thought
Indeed, everything changes. But take into consideration that we were wearing skinny jeans for about 15 years. Who would have thought it? Generally when I invest in something, it’s not based just on how long it might hang in my closet, but what the cost per wear will end up being. I wear my jeans and denim jackets frequently, so cost per wear is much better on those than say a fancy dress that I may wear a few times. I tend to invest in casual garments these days, ones that I can wear often.
Kay I do exactly that too , it makes my choices so much easier to work it out that way 👌🏻
Good morning, Kay,
I just had to comment on today’s blog post showing this new Libby dress. When you first showed the Libby dress in the purple jewel tones, I thought it was just gorgeous but a bit pricey to try. Then you showed it again in a recent post of your “real life” outfits for the week and I had to click the link again….to my surprise and joy that dress was on sale for $100 Off plus another 15% off with your Kay15 code! But it was “final sale”. Even though I never tried this brand and had no idea how the fit would be, I pulled the trigger. My dress arrived a couple of days ago and it fit and flattered so perfectly! Now I want to get another one in a different color/pattern!
Thank you for all you do to show us tips and tricks for how to look and feel our best, as well as showing so many styles and accessories in different price ranges that are quality pieces to add to our wardrobes.
Blessings to you and your family,
Angela C.
Whew! I’m glad that worked. Hahaha! No, really, I’m so pleased that you like the dress. It feels great on, doesn’t it? Thanks so much for sharing with us. Enjoy!
Hmmmm, it seems that in the last little while you are displaying a lot of small print garments in darker colors or “old fashioned” prints. I just can’t help looking at these and be reminded of my grandmother in her “flour sack” dresses. As a result, I have always viewed these prints in dresses as matronly. You wear them well and many ladies have complimented them… just can’t get my mind past the old lady notion. Sorry. So, I guess that really settles what one of my style rules are, which is to keep it simple and classic, yet loose and comfortable. So, I’m thinking my style icon must be someone like Katherine Hepburn, referring back to your video from yesterday. I guess your presentations really do get us to find what works best for us and for that, I whole heartily thank you.
Thank you Kay for bringing lovely ideas clothing and the word to me in your blogs.
Enjoy everyday of summer as the days are fleeting. I’ve noticed that especially now that I’m over 70 and I so appreciate each and everyone i have. Beautiful day ahead here visiting the Oregon coast.
I like the wear now/wear later concept. When I shop, I look for pieces that I can wear in multiple seasons.
Hoping that these shapeless, floral, tiered, ruffled dresses are going away soon though! I don’t find them flattering or stylish
Huh, well this one isn’t shapeless. It has a pretty waistline and is fitted in the bodice. But if that’s not your cup of tea, no problem. Thanks for reading.
Oh my gosh! I hope you didn’t take my comment about all these tiered dresses as an insult about your look. I should have added that they don’t fit MY style words and they don’t look flattering on me. There are an abundance of them out there so I’m Hoping their season will pass so I can find dresses that suit me.
No, no, not insulted. Just wanted to make sure you knew it had a waistline if that wasn’t clear from the photos. 😊
Hi Kay, The Nordstrom sale always gets me to thinking about fall and transition clothing. (Btw…Thanks so much for keeping us updated. By the time I read your Anniv Sale Under $50 post, the All Saints cropped tees were sold out in my size. But now they are listed as available to back order at the sale price. So I ordered a couple.) It’s still so summery here in SC. I’m trying to wear spring/summer for a couple more weeks. But by early August I’ll be ready. Esp since our trip to Alaska is just weeks away.
I’ve been re-reading your packing posts and watched your video 3 times. :0 I noticed that Athleta has a 25% sale today and am thinking of going ahead and hitting your link to the long Sutro Trench Rainout jacket. I have a question…Since you sized up enough to accommodate extra layers, do you think you’ll be wearing it very much when you are not traveling or hiking and thinking about shedding layers? Also, did the Bean and Athleta pants protect you from the rain enough? I’m wondering about rain pants as well.
Hi Lael, Always good to hear from you. I’ve been surprised at how many returns and/or restocks there have been in the NSale. I’ll definitely continue to wear the Sutro Trench for daily life. It’s just a great jacket. I felt fine and dry in the L.L.Bean pants and the Athleta pants. I actually only wore the L.L. Bean pants once I think because I just liked the feel of the Athleta ones more. But we didn’t do anything where we were just standing out in the rain a lot. It’s funny, some people write or share Alaska packing lists as thought you’re going to be doing that. But I had no intention of it. Hahaha! We took an umbrella, of course, but our ship also gave us a big golf size umbrella to carry off ship with us as needed, which we did. But if you feel like you’ll be in the rain a lot, I guess rainproof pant covers might be a good idea. I just didn’t feel like I would really need them and I didn’t. Have a great trip!
Your BFMD was spot on. Divinely appointed. Thanks!
Jean jacket over a cute dress, always a win!
I like that you did the ‘Wear Now/Wear Later’ , such a good idea Kay 👌🏻Such a pretty dress and the pattern is lovely , our Autumns in the North East of the UK aren’t like your Fall in America , they are usually cold , but I could still wear that dress with my Dark Purple Crop Waist Cardigan and my Dark Plum Suede Boots . Thank you Xx
