How to Style Drawstring Pants for Fall

I wore several pairs of drawstring linen and cotton pants during the spring and summer and loved them. Not only are the comfortable and easy-breezy, but they feel and look fresh and modern. They also have the relaxed, casual vibe that perfectly fits my lifestyle. The trend continues into fall, so today I’m sharing several outfits with a pair of grey mélange drawstring pants for fall.

If you’ve watched my recent video 5 Fabulous Fall Fashion Color Combinations you may remember seeing these Sawyer pull-on pants in grey mélange. I featured them there in a grey and peridot green combination and so many viewers indicated that it was one of their favorite color pairings. These pants are still available and currently 40% off. You can get them in a wide range of sizes and in misses, petite and tall fits. They’re super comfortable and a substantial lightweight fabric. They run true to size for a relaxed fit.

How to Style Drawstring Pants for Fall

First up I’ve styled the drawstring pants with a crisp white button-up shirt. I’ve left it untucked with just a partial tuck in the front. You absolutely don’t have to style yours that way, but I love the effortless, relaxed vibe. I also like that you can define where your waist is with this style hack, but still have coverage.

shirt // pull-on pants // similar tote // loafers c/o (use code KAYFLATS for 10% off your first pair of Ally flats) // necklace // earrings // bracelet

If you like the coverage, but don’t like my style hack, I suggest you check out this side shirred poplin shirt. It’s a beautiful option and also 40% off.

PRO TIP: When you’re styling relaxed fit, drawstring pants, it’s important to consider proportions. And in this case we mean proportions in relation to fullness. Since the pants are full and voluminous, we want to reign things in up top a bit. You’ll see throughout this post that I am wearing some volume up top, too, but I add definition with some sort of tuck.

This relaxed fit shirt is 40% off and available in misses and petite sizes. Soon I’m posting a full blog post with some favorite white button-up shirts and this one will definitely make the cut. For the price, it’s a great shirt and the fabric is smooth and just the right thickness.

I completed this white and grey pairing with my camel loafers. (You can use code KAYFLATS for 10% off your first pair of flats at Ally.) I love the combination of grey and camel, and it works every time. So no need to purchase grey shoes!

cardigan sweater // pull-on pants // ballet flats c/o (use code KAY15 for 15% off for a limited time.) // necklace // earrings // bracelet // similar tote

A second way to style your drawstring pants for fall is to top them with a button-front cardigan. This year we’re seeing closer fitting cardigans (but not tight) worn as pullovers. So check your wardrobe to see if you have something that fits the bill.

I picked up this cashmere-wool cardigan in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale and now it is available at an even lower price at Nordstrom Rack. It’s super soft and fits true to size.

Again, to complete this grey and beige combination, I wore camel shoes. These are my M.Gemi Una ballet flats, some of the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever put on my feet. I literally look at them each day and think, “What can I wear today so that I can wear my Unas?”

My ballet flats are in the color light tan, but they come in a wide variety of colors and textures. They fit true to size if you use their size guide and they’re comfortable enough for all-day wear right out of the box.

ivory sweater // pull-on pants // pointed toe mules (currently marked down 60% off) // tote // necklace // earrings // bracelet

Of course you can also wear your pull-on pants with a pullover like this ribbed cable sweater which is also 40% off today.

I gave the ivory sweater a gentle front tuck to better define my waist and achieve optimal proportions. Remember, when you’re putting together a pants outfit you generally want to create a visual line at 1/3 down the outfit, giving you a 1/3 up top and 2/3 below proportion. And, as mentioned before, that gentle tuck also helps to balance the volume below.

This time I completed the grey and ivory pairing with light beige mules. I also got these in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, but now they are marked down even more and they’re still available in this raffia as well as other colors. I find them to run true to size.

navy henley tee // bomber jacket // pull-on pants // sneakers // tote // necklace // earrings // bracelet

For our final outfit, I’ve worn the grey pull-on pants with a navy henley tee and a burgundy mélange wool blend bomber jacket. Both are 40% off, but the bomber jacket is almost sold out.

Since I was wearing a jacket, I completely tucked in my tee to define my waistline. The jacket fits nicely true to size, so it gives the coverage I need at the waist but doesn’t add significant bulk. And my final shoe choice to style drawstring pants for fall is a fashionable sneaker. This Dimity sand sneaker is one I purchased in the spring and it’s almost sold out in this color. It is super comfortable and fits true to size.

Do you like wearing drawstring pants? I know someone don’t like the drawstring itself. And I get it. Sometimes I do tuck it into my pants with the front tuck, as I did with the ivory sweater. But otherwise just keep in mind that the drawstring is quite on trend right now. So just wear it with confidence!

Thanks so much for stopping in today. I hope today’s post has provided a little style inspiration. Have a blessed and beautiful day!

Blessed for My Day

Things change, things happen. Hard times come. News seems daunting. If we focus on our circumstances or the everchanging tide, it is easy to become anxious, even paralyzed with fear. We are constantly craving stability and security, so when those things feel threatened it is only natural to tremble a little.

But friend we don’t have to live in worry or fear. The Lord has assured us that, yes, hard times will come and things will constantly change, but He will always be with us. That may sound like an empty promise at first. But take into account the benefits of God’s presence in your life. He provides steadfast love, assures you of a covenant of peace and wraps you snug in compassion. No matter what today holds or the future brings, you can face it with joy and peace.

For the mountains may depart
    and the hills be removed,
but my steadfast love shall not depart from you,
and my covenant of peace shall not be removed,”
says the Lord, who has compassion on you. ~ Isaiah 54:10

  1. I never have worn grey with cognac. Seems like a warm tone with a cool tone but seems to work. I like drawstring for Spring and Summer but not sure about after that. You look cute. Looking forward to your white blouse post. I’m looking for an affordable one like the LOFT one, but not so long in the back. I’m short. 5’3”.

  2. I enjoyed wearing my linen drawstring pants too. I tucked my tops all the way. I was thinking of ordering those Loft pants. I have questions. Do they run big? They seem wide. Would you say they are high rise or midrise?

    1. I find them to be roomy but true to size. I would say they are midrise, hitting me just below the belly button.

  3. I appreciate this post. I was just trying on a pair of drawstring pants today! It’s so nice to see these options!

  4. The cardigan option is appealing to me. I have a couple of summer weight cardigans, but will search for a winter option now. For me, a more defined waist with tucked in tops will be the way to go. The short jacket suggestion will work wonderfully, especially since I have a few already in my closet. Isn’t closet shopping great?

Thanks you, again, for Blessed for My Day. It nearly always hit me spot on.

  5. Kay,

Enjoyed this post. Thank you for sharing items from Loft. I think it is an affordable store with nice items.
Love the pants. You could wear so many different colors with them.

Vacation is exciting. I hope you and James have a great time!

  6. I have been wanting to get on board with drawstring pants but I have been very unsure of how to style them.As usual, you have offered wonderful, stylish options. Thanks so much Kay!

  7. I’m with Beth P, no drawstrings for me, but I would definitely wear a pair of gray elastic waist pull on flowy trousers. And happily I own some! 🙂 I can reproduce almost all of your outfits today with what is in my closet, all but the last one. I think this is going to be outfit inspiration for next week at work!!! 🙂

  8. I stopped by my local Loft store today to try on these drawstring pants. They are not something I would typically be drawn to but I liked the different way you styled them and wanted to get out of a rut in my wardrobe. I absolutely fell in love with them and promptly bought them along with a different cardigan in the store. Thanks for the inspiration, I’m looking forward to styling these for our very mild winters in Texas as well as wearing them into other seasons since the color is such a great neutral. I found them to run true to size as well and a little on the roomy side.

  9. I love drawstring pants – they are comfortable and perfect for travel or everyday wear. Also, they still fit if you go up or down a few pounds…
