Happy Friday! It’s time for me to share how I really dressed for my day this week. As usual I’m starting with last Friday’s outfit and sharing through Thursday of this week. This little semi regular diary helps me to stay accountable to my own mantra of getting dressed for my day, but it also helps me to see if my style is evolving or growing stagnate, if I’m making good use of the clothes in my closet and if I’m taking the time to accessorize and pull my look together. Hopefully it also provides you with a little style inspiration.

How to Shop Here: To shop the items I feature, just click on the words in the captions of photos, the highlighted words in my text or the images in the shopping widgets I sometimes include. When you shop through my links I potentially earn a commission on your purchases, but at no additional cost to you. Thank you so much for supporting my work here by shopping my links. Items that have been gifted to me by the associated brand are indicated with “c/o”.

I like to focus on why I wore what I wore and how I put my looks together in these weekly posts. So I may not call out each item shown. You’ll find links to anything that is available in the captions under the photos. I’ll also share fit information there IF the garment doesn’t fit true to size (TTS). I try to be transparent about gifting; gifted items are indicated with a C/O beside them, meaning they were given to me “courtesy of” that brand. Finally, I’m 5’8″ and about 160 pounds, so I normally wear a misses 10. I have even proportions and an hourglass shape.

How I Dressed for My Day Friday

Last week I was home alone all week. James had gone to a nature photography workshop at Caddo Lake in Texas, and the plan was for me to join him later for a visit with his family. Friday I spent most of the day working in my office so that I could be prepared for a week away. But I did get out for a couple of errands and a quick bite.

sweater (more economical option) // scarf // belt // pants (TTS; wearing 30) // loafers // earrings

I introduced these frosty olive corduroy pants in this Wednesday’s YouTube video, which was my first ever fashion haul unboxing. I was anxious to style them so I worked on that a bit that morning. I ended up with what I felt was a classic pairing of ivory and olive. And then I realized this new leaf batik wool scarf works with the pairing beautifully. I pulled the outfit together with a gentle front tuck and a belt.

How I Dressed for Air & Highway Travel Sunday

I never did dress for my day on Saturday. I was too busy wrapping up work and cleaning up the house before my trip. I like to leave the house as clean as possible when I travel so that I return home to fresh linens and towels, a tidy kitchen and clean bathrooms.

sweater // vest // scarf is unavailable but similar option here // pants // booties // purse // suitcase

On Sunday morning I headed to the airport early just in case lines were long at TSA. (They weren’t at all thankfully and all was on time.) I wore my comfortable Ayr High Hopes pants with a favorite Quince cashmere sweater that I often travel with. It was quite cold in Cincinnati that morning and promised to be fairly chilly in Texas, too. After spending about two hours packing the evening before (because I was determined to get it all in a carry-on) I had decided to wear just my quilted vest for a coat. I knew we had some cool weather in the forecast, but layers could take care of that.

What I Wore Monday in Texas

I brought three pairs of shoes on my trip to Texas, plus a pair of bedroom slippers that I never leave home without. But I ended up only wearing my sneakers and my boots. That’s where I started my packing really, with my shoes. From there I considered the weather and my activities to choose the three pants I’d want to wear. I ended up with a pair of cords, a pair of jeans and my Ayr pants. That gave me variety, but they’re all casual and comfortable for visiting with family and travel.

button down flannel // white tee // corduroy pants (also available at Nordstrom) // similar sneakers // belt // purse // necklace

My rich coffee corduroy pants from Lands’ End are so comfortable but modern and fun, too. For a day of visiting with family I topped them with a simple white tee and my L.L. Bean flannel shirt. I tried on the boots with this outfit, but in the end decided the sneakers were a better option. I did complete the look with a brown belt. And my Michael Kors purse proved to be a worthy choice for the entire trip. It matches perfectly with my booties, so it felt like a smart choice.

Tuesday’s Casual Outfit

As the week progressed it got a little warmer each day. But my packing selection turned out to be just about right. I’d start the morning with my quilted vest but shed it fairly early in the day. Then I’d need it again when we’d leave James’ sister’s home late at night to return to our accommodations.

sweater // vest // neck scarf // straight leg jeans (marked down 45%!) // booties // purse

On this day I wore my Paige Stevie straight leg jeans, which are currently marked down 45% at Nordstrom. I topped them simply with my oatmeal colored sweater and added a pretty embroidered bandana at my neck for a little color.

How I Dressed for My Day on Wednesday

On our final full day in West Texas I opted again for my rich coffee corduroy pants, topping this time with my Frank & Eileen denim shirt and that embroidered bandana. I completed the look by tucking in the top and wearing a belt.

denim shirt // pants // scarf // purse // booties // belt // earrings

I enjoyed the fact that my Michael Kors booties gave all of my outfits a slight Western vibe without looking like I was trying to hard to look like a cowgirl. Ha!

How I Traveled on Thursday

We had planned to travel home for three days until we remembered that we are attending a University of Arizona football game against University of Cincinnati on Saturday. Both my son and daughter-in-law (as well as my daughter) graduated from U of A, so we’re excited to see their alma mater in Ohio this weekend. That said, Thursday and today are long days in the car.

sweater // scarf is unavailable but similar option here // pants // similar sneakers // purse

But I felt comfortable and still polished in my Ayr High Hopes pants and a grey cashmere sweater (32% off at Nordstrom). By the way, I used the size guide on those Ayr High Hopes pants to get the perfect fit. I wear a large in the long inseam to accommodate my height. You can see that even with a lot of wear they keep their shape beautifully and they don’t pill either.

That’s a wrap! Today we’re driving into Cincinnati, and I’ll be wearing my denim shirt over, yes, those Ayr High Hopes pants again. Thanks so much for dropping in for a little style inspiration. Have a lovely day! Oh, and you can see everything I packed in the shopping widget below. And if for some reason the widget isn’t working (because it wasn’t this morning) go HERE.

Blessed for My Day

I battle with a little highway anxiety when we travel by car. As long as we stick to state roads, I generally enjoy the trip. But since we needed to journey from Abilene, Texas, to Cincinnati, Ohio, in two days, we’re on the highway…along with 3,425,509 semi trucks. I manage by reading or working on cell phone for the most part. But I don’t want to depend on diversions to keep my anxiety at bay.

So I also pray. Really, prayer is the key to relieving my tension and regaining a sense of well-being and peace. James and I always start our travels with prayer. But I also pause anytime I need to as we drive down the highway and whisper a prayer to the Lord. No, I don’t just pray for Him to keep us safe; I know He’s already doing that. I praise Him for who He is and how He moves. And I thank Him for times in the past when He has blessed me in so many ways. That’s the kind of prayer that really lifts my focus from the traffic on the road so that my peace is restored and my heart rate normalizes again.

It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
    to sing praises to your name, O Most High;
to declare your steadfast love in the morning,
and your faithfulness by night… ~ Psalm 92:1,2

xoxo, Kay

  1. My husband and I drove across country a month or so ago, and I share your dislike of national highways and trucks. I will say, however, that most truck drivers are better than car drivers. The absolute worst drive, with cars that were almost in my trunk and driving me off the road, was 271 from Cleveland to Columbus. One car literally made me cry he was so aggressive and only about 10 feet behind me. I love your scarves: was it a conscious decision to leave necklaces at home and rely on scarves?

    1. Thanks for sharing. I actually brought and wore two necklaces. I have my Lagos necklace on right now and I brought and wore one from Electric Picks. It probably just didn’t show in the photos so my assistant didn’t link it.

  2. Love these type post. You always do so good at putting your outfits together. Did you cut off your Paige jeans? They don’t look like the ones you linked. They look so comfy. I’m also interested in the black athleisure pant. They look great. I just received the Vouri Halo Modern straight leg pant. I got them in black in the short length. I’m 5’3” so perfect for me. They have regular length too. Loving them. You might like too. They fit true to size. I got mine at Nordstrom. Safe travels home. The older I get the less I like to drive on the freeway too and like to find back roads if possible but many times it’s not. I too find prayers of praise and thankfulness give me peace. Enjoy your game to come.

  3. Love these outfits, Kay. BTW, I haven’t been receiving your Wed videos for quite some time. Any idea why that is?

    1. If you’re referring to a YouTube notification, you’ll want to check your settings in your subscriptions and make sure you still have notifications toggled on. Otherwise I really have no idea. That’s disconcerting.

      1. Thanks, Kay. No idea what happened. I had been getting your emails under the name of “Kay Harms” and then it changed to DFMD heading and then I stopped getting the videos. I’ll check further but as far as I know, nothing has changed unless I leaned on a key on my keyboard and got everything bolloxed up! Ha.

        1. Hi Bonnie. According to my email service you unsubscribed in May. You can resubscribe anytime to begin receiving the emails again. 🤗

  4. These types of posts where you show what you wore for the week are my favorite ones that you do, Kay. They always inspire me! I used to be quite clueless about style and now my style is better thanks to you!

  5. I love this DFMD travel post. Packing in a carry on is a challenge, and making sure everything ties in can be a difficult task, however you did it so well here! My question is about the 2 cashmere sweaters, Quince and Nordstrom. What are the differences between them? Do they pill? How many times have they been washed and how have they held up? I know you’ve had both for a while, and I’m new to cashmere. Before I purchase I’m hoping to get some background.

Thanks for this wonderful post! I love how you put everything together! Betsy

    1. Really I think this particular Nordstrom cashmere and the Quince are very similar in quality. I like both brands a lot better than Talbots cashmere but not quite as much as J Crew or some other brands. Obviously I like them well enough to wear them. All cashmere will pill, but a cashmere comb or depiller can take care of that. I wash my cashmere by hand and lay flat to dry and they do beautifully.

  6. These are all lovely outfits Kay. I’m loving all the scarves, especially the square and triangle ones that are available now. I hope to see more outfits styled with scarves as they seem to elevate even a basic outfit.

  7. I just love all of your outfits. The scarves do really vamp up the outfits. I am the short variation. Short neck, arms and legs. How about 4’11”. So I have a problem with all of the scarves being too thick or too long. But I love them. I’ve really tried to keep them loose enough to not choke me, but it’s hard. Would you have an answer to this. Also, thank you for your Blessed for My Day. I do my best Praying when I am traveling in my car. I hope you have a wonderful day! I look forward to your next Dressed for my Day!!

    1. It sounds like a small scarf might be best for you, one like my bandana. They come in silk, too. Anthropologie has a wide assortment.

  8. I loved this post! Your taste is wonderful. You got lucky that it was cool in Texas while you were here. It’s warming up again now, and I was in short sleeves today and the A/c is on.

  9. I don’t drive on interstate 35 which runs through my city. If I want to go to a big city like Austin my sister or my daughter take me. I like to travel taking what I call the scenic route. Like you I always pray before I drive. I hope my grandkids will learn from that because I always do that when I take them to school. The brown cords are no longer available in a petite size. I’m looking for pants like that.

  10. Hi Kay,

Could you do a video on styling scarfs? I have several and I never know how to tie them or use them as a accent piece.

    Thanks
    Andre

  11. Great outfits! You looked very comfortable but polished and a little elevated! I feel spending time with family is precious and we should look our best for them. After all, they are the most important people in our lives! I also love that you clean your house before you leave! I always do that too, it makes coming home feel special
