Easy Fall Outfit with Wool Blend Ruana

Welcome to Dressed for My Day! Today I’m sharing the outfit I wore on the final day of my recent fall getaway. This is such an easy fall outfit, but the addition of a wool blend reversible ruana elevated the look without any fuss or muss. I felt oh so pretty, but the outfit was still practical for a day spent mostly in the car.

Styling a Ruana for Fall

When James recently surprised me with reservations at a log cabin in Augusta, Kentucky, on the Ohio River and dinner reservations at a casual but upscale restaurant, I had to wrap my work up and rather hastily throw things into a suitcase. But I wasn’t complaining. I desperately needed a little break and a change of scenery.

My husband took his camera on the trip, but I really didn’t want him to have to worry about taking blog photos. We mostly spent a lot of time walking the quaint town, exploring an old cemetery that dated back to 1800, lounging in the cabin and driving through the countryside. It was pure bliss. The leaves were gorgeous, the weather cooperated and the company was sweet.

But on the way home I told James that if he wanted to take fashion photos we could certainly snap some shots of the outfit I was wearing. While I shared this cotton boat neck sweater in this previous post, Autumn Day Trip Outfit, I didn’t mind sharing it with you again. And good thing! It’s now marked down and you can get an extra 30% off, making it less than $40. And remember, it comes in two other beautiful colors.

Cotton Sweater

I paired the 100% cotton boat neck sweater with my new washed black super straight jeans from Everlane. I love these straight leg jeans. If you hang around here much, you might know that I prefer my jeans to feel and look like jeans (not leggings), but I still like for them to have a little stretch for comfort and ease of wear. These washed black super straight jeans check all the boxes.

Black Straight Jeans

The Everlane washed black super straight jeans have that on trend straight leg silhouette and a high waistband. They absolutely wear like real jeans with very little stretch (98% Cotton 2% Elastane), but just enough to make them comfortable for riding in the car several hours. These straight jeans come in two lengths: ankle and regular. I’m wearing the regular length. Oh, and if these jeans are your cup of tea, you’ll also be glad to learn that they are under $80.

The super straight jeans also come in a nice basic medium blue, but I found them to run smaller. I tried these jeans in my regular 29, but ended up going with the 30 because the waist band runs a bit small.

Wool Blend Ruana

Let’s talk about this beautiful ruana! I love the weight and the drape of this wool blend reversible plaid wrap. I really think it is so much more lovely in person than it appears on the Talbots website. And it was so much fun to wear, even in the car. (I also shared this wrap in my What to Wear Dining Outside this Fall & Winter video.) And did I mention that it’s reversible? How fun is that???

leather Loafers

I finished off the look with my black Italian loafers from Everlane. The Italian leather really is luxurious. And guess what? They’re marked down 39% for a limited time. I sized up one full size from my usual 9.5 to a 10.5, and they just fit. So definitely check the sizing recommendations on these loafers before purchasing. By the way, your shipping will be free and returns are easy with Everlane.

Once again, I tucked this sweater in in the front. It’s a fairly long sweater and the tuck really helps keep the proportions optimal and overall look pulled together. I added this reversible belt for even more polish.

Black Straight Jeans

As I always do when traveling, I kept my jewelry very simple. I think my long pendant and chain necklace would have looked lovely here. But I didn’t take any extra jewelry and only wore a small gold chain that is no longer available and these gold teardrop earrings. I wore these earrings and this multi strand bracelet.

By the way, I also took these Brooklyn plaid ankle pants along with me on the trip. I wore them with this same boat neck sweater to dinner the night before. The outfit felt polished but still casual and comfortable.

Blessed for My Day

Trust me on this, Jesus is not holding out on you. You know that, right? But sometimes we do indeed act as though we believe that God is withholding good things from us. We compare our lives with those of other people and feel like we come up short. Or we lament the things we wish for and do not have and reason that God must not love us as much as He loves others.

But the truth is that we have a God who generously and passionately invites us to “Come! Drink!” He wants to satisfy our thirsty souls so that from us flow rivers of living water. He intends for us to be so satisfied and blessed that we can’t help but share from the overflow with other people. So today when you are tempted to think that God is holding out on you, run to Him instead and drink.

Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’” But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. ~ John 7:37-39

  1. I’m glad that you and James enjoyed your day out. He’s a good photographer, and you looked lovely as usual.

    1. Thanks Dorinda. He really is a good photographer and so gracious to support my goals by giving of his time and efforts. I’m very grateful. ❤️

  2. Hello Kay, lovely outfit as always! I purchased the sweater in the blue and can’t wait for it to arrive. Am curious about your lineage (or in this case your husbands)! Harms is an unusual last name and I come from a Harms lineage. My great grandfather was Bernhardt (Ben) Harms.
    Thanks
    Ramona

    1. Hi Ramona. Thanks for shopping through Dressed for My Day. I don’t know a lot about my husband’s family except that his dad grew up in Illinois. I’ve met other people with the last name Harms who also trace their families back to Illinois. I’ll ask him about the Bernhardt name. ?

    2. I love your blessing for today. I think we are all blessed with so many things from our Father, not just monetary blessings, but blessings of talents and most of all, time. In our busy lives, sharing time to visit with the elderly or give a young mother a break or listen to a student about their school day is so important.
I see another Harms from Illinois contacted you. Seems to be quite a popular name. When I first moved to Montana there was a teacher in Great Falls whose name was Rudolph Harms – same as my grandfather’s.
Your pictures are great, I can almost smell the autumn leaves. Ours are gone- we went from 70s to teens almost overnight and have about 14 inches of beautiful clean snow. God bless and stay safe!

I hope that you have a very productive and good day. Happy Anniversary to your son and DIL!

  6. At only 5 feet tall, I have a problem with wraps and ruanas but this looks so good on you. Glad you had a good fall trip. So thankful for the BFMD each day.
