Casual Friday with Colored Denim & Cardi

August 21, 2018

Welcome to another working girl post at Dressed for My Day. But while I shared professional clothing from Ann Taylor’s fitting room yesterday, today I’m showing you more of a Casual Friday ensemble. I’ve used colors that are pretty for the fall, but also perfectly appropriate right now. And these colored denims and navy cardi may even be suitable for Monday through Thursday at some of your workplaces.

This is also a bit of a save and splurge post. The jeans, sleeveless top, cardigan and crossbody bag all come from Target. As you can imagine, these are budget friendly items. But the shoes are my Sam Edelman leopard print flats from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale – a bit of a splurge. But honestly, I think the shoes are what make this simple outfit shine.

Just so you could see the sleeveless top more clearly, I slipped off the cardigan. This is a Knox Rose top available exclusively at Target. Right now it’s available in all sizes. It feels great on, and I think it looks feminine and soft against the dark navy and burgundy pieces.

For some reason I think colored denim may be a better option for Casual Friday than blue jeans. If nothing else, they indicate that you’ve put a little more effort into your attire.

I’m wearing mid-rise skinny jeans from Universal Thread in burgundy. They fit nicely and feel pretty comfortable. I won’t lie to you; these do not feel like high end designer jeans. Duh. Honestly, they feel like Target jeans. But they work. And if you don’t want to spend a lot on colored jeans, these are a great option. They come in a full range of sizes including short and long options. I’m wearing an 8.

Perhaps the most surprising piece in this ensemble from Target is the cardigan. It’s very light weight, which is nice for these transition weeks leading into fall. It would be a nice sweater just to keep in your drawer or closet if you have a cold office. But I love the nice drape and the very elasticized sleeves. Sometimes cardigans can be tight on my arms, but this one is very comfortable. The cardigan is by A New Day, and it’s available in lots of sizes and several more colors, including gold, rust, gray and white.

By the way, don’t forget you can order from and have your merchandise delivered to the store for pick-up so you don’t have to pay shipping.

I think this Addison Universal Thread crossbody bag in squash is a beautiful splash of color and light against this otherwise dark ensemble. Or you could choose the red, cognac or black bag.

I can’t say enough good things about these Sam Edelman flats. They’re my first pair of Sam Edelmans and if they all feel this way, no wonder the fuss. These feel like socks on your feet! No, they don’t have a lot of support or cushion, but nor do you feel like you’re walking on cardboard. I could definitely stand in them all day, but of course I don’t really have finicky feet. Here’s another pair of Sam Edelman leopard print flats at a little bit lower price point.

Where’s your jewelry, Kay? Good question! This was one of the few times that I’ve done a fashion shoot where I had to take everything with me for five changes. And then I had to change in a park bathroom. You know that wasn’t fun. So I don’t know if I forgot to take it with me or I just couldn’t lay my hands on it fast enough or I was too tired to fool with it. Ha! Y’all, these photo shoots are pretty exhausting.

Anyhow, enough whining. I’m simply wearing my Azalea Drop Earrings that I got in my last Rocksbox order. I do love these gold earrings. And really, maybe they’re enough. Here are some similar ones from Target that I like equally well.

Blessed for My Day

Today may you find everything you are longing for in the person of the Lord, Jesus Christ. Do you find yourself reaching out for things, clinging to relationships or pursuing elusive goals in a never-ending effort to satisfy some deep longing? We can all relate. God has actually put within us a vacuum of the soul that can only be filled and satisfied through Him. But all of us in our human nature try to fill that void with things, people and/or experiences. That never works for long and always frustrates in the end. Sometimes it results in bondage, too. So today, I pray for you to turn your hungry soul to God, ask Him to satisfy you like nothing else can and rejoice in the satisfaction He provides.

Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” ~ John 4:13-14

Spread the love
xoxo, Kay

  1. Nice casual combo Kay……I wear colored jeans often on Fridays at work, especially in the Autumn season. I recently purchased leopard flats/loafers online from Target (by New Day). For under $25, they look great and I can wear them with many outfits. I have purchased other items from New Day and have been very pleased. I’m looking forward to seeing more of your Fall Fashion ideas. ~Lisa~

    1. Yes, animal print shoes are almost an essential to me. I have a second, less expensive pair that I got at Target a couple of years ago. They’re great for more casual usage. ?

  2. Thank you, I have been looking for burgundy jeans! I’m not sure which size, so I ordered both 6 & 8, and will return one to my local Target. I enjoy your blog, today’s BFMD was spot on for me.
