Add a Casual Jacket to Your Wardrobe for Spring

February 21, 2023

It may be the middle of February, but we had real spring weather yesterday. For a little while it was balmy and warm, then it was pouring rain and then the wind blew and the temperatures dropped. Just a normal spring day. Predictably unpredictable! That’s exactly why it’s so smart to add a casual jacket to your wardrobe for spring. And I rounded up a few really great ones at Kohl’s.

Spring Jackets

Of course Kohl’s has a wide assortment of jackets, but the three I’m sharing with you here are what I would call windbreakers and everyday jackets. These are the kinds of jackets you want to throw on over a t-shirt and jeans when attending your grandkids’ baseball games or track events. Or you might put one on as you head out to the grocery store, library or exercise class. Sometimes we get so busy adding those fashion-forward blazers and cotton utility jackets and such to our wardrobes that we forget to make sure we have these utilitarian essentials covered, too.

But just because it’s an “everyday jacket” doesn’t mean it can’t look sharp and current. I love the earthy olive green color of the above water-resistant utility jacket. It’s so versatile. It will look sharp with jeans and a tee or chinos and a cotton sweater. But if you prefer something lighter, this water-resistant utility jacket also comes in a light tan that is equally versatile.

Utlity Jacket

The water-resistant utility jacket cinches on the inside with inner drawstrings. It zips and snaps. And the utility jacket has functional flap pockets on the chest and side entry pockets below the waistline. It fits so comfortably true to size (TTS).

To model these jackets I’m wearing two different pairs of Lee high waisted straight leg jeans (but I feel like they are more mid-waisted jeans), three different everyday v-neck tees and some fun ivory and black booties. They all fit true to size. And I can highly recommend the everyday v-neck tees for, well, everyday v-neck tees.

My next jacket is a lightweight updated trench by Nine West. It’s water-resistant and lined in a silky polyester fabric of the same color as the jacket. The updated trench (TTS) is available in this cheerful bluette, but also bone ivory.

I find very few waterproof jackets on the market, but plenty of water resistant ones. And really, unless you’re walking distances in the rain, this is probably as much protection as you’ll need. But I did find a pretty new Totes umbrella to add to my collection, too. I like to keep one in the car, one in the garage and one in the coat closet to add to my handbag on a rainy day. This Totes folds down nicely for the purse. And it opens and closes with the simple push of a button.

Of course the Totes umbrella is available in other colors and patterns, too.

I really love both of these jackets, but my favorite of the three is the next one. I had the hardest time selecting which color I would order the hooded London Fog active jacket in. I finally decided on this chic looking stone, but my on my how I wish I could have the orchid and white jackets, too!

London Fog Active Jacket

This lightweight, cinched waist jacket zips up and has a drawstring hood. It also has really cool cuff guards with thumb holes at the wrists of the sleeves. So if it is rainy and/or windy, you’re wrists will stay protected from dripping water or cold updrafts.

I’m not usually one to wear brand labels on the outside of my clothing, but somehow the minimalist “London Fog” strips along the zipper and cuffs don’t bother me here. Maybe it’s because London Fog is such a longstanding and conservative brand, so to speak. In this case, I think it looks pretty classy and chic. But I did want to point it out in case that’s a game-changer for you.

The hooded London Fog active jacket (TTS, also in white & orchid) has a sewn-in net lining and features two zipper pockets. This casual jacket is water-repellant and has the cinch cords for the waist band on the outside.

I mean I seriously would love to have the orchid pink or white jackets, too. So tempting! I’ve gathered these and a few other casual jackets for you to consider in the shopping widget below. And you can take an extra 15% off your Kohl’s order of $100+ using code CATCH15OFF.

Blessed for My Day

What happens next? We all incur rude behavior, disappointing moments and even big blows. But this week we’re considering what happens next. Yeah, let’s take that rude behavior as our case in point today. You may be out and about on a beautiful spring day, running your errands with a pep in your step and suddenly you become the victim of rude behavior…from a fellow shopper, the person across the counter, another driver on the highway, the person in line behind you. Sure, you counter it with a little kindness and hope to flip the rudeness over and find a semblance of decency. But no, the person continues to be curt and harsh and difficult. What do you do?

Like Peter who asked Jesus how many times he needed to forgive a brother or sister who had wronged him, we generally want to know, “When is enough enough?” And when our buttons are being pushed over and over, despite our best attempts to “make nice,” it is indeed tempting to draw the line. But I’m learning that the best course of action is to follow the pattern set by Christ, who humbled Himself…even to the point of death on the cross. Let’s consider the rudeness and more that Jesus incurred for us on His way to the cross and I think that will help us better understand what should happen next when we are treated rudely. (PS – I’m not suggesting you should put up with abusive behavior. We’re just talking everyday, ordinary rudeness here.)

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:

Who, being in very nature God,
    did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,
    being made in human likeness.
And being found in appearance as a man,
    he humbled himself
    by becoming obedient to death—
even death on a cross! ~ Philippians 2:5-8

xoxo, Kay

  1. Love the three jacket options. I literally was just thinking yesterday I needed a light weight coat. What wonderful timing for me.

  2. All of the jackets are so nice, however, my fave is the London Fog, it’s quite smart the way you styled it. I’m also partial to the Nine West trench. That blue sings spring 😊doesn’t it. I picked up a pair of stone coloured chelsea booties that I can hardly wait to wear.. they just might need a new jacket 🤔 lol. It’s been a long dreary winter, spring can’t come soon enough! You look positively radiant in the photos, blue looks smashing on you. Have a wonderful week – Blessings

  3. I also like your London Fog jacket the best of the bunch. I don’t like wearing clothing that sports the name of a brand either. I always feel that if the company wants me to advertise for them, let them pay me. Ha!

  4. Good thoughts! It is hard for me to move beyond mean behavior. It bothers me for a good while. I try to remind myself that I don’t know what they are going through-maybe they just received horrible news or someone abused them! Once a lady stuck her tongue out at me while I was driving! I don’t think I was doing anything wrong, but it bothered me the rest of the day! Silly. We are so human!

Question-I bought the lovely cream boots from Nordstom. I have never had cream boots before. Can I wear them with white or tan? It looks like you are doing that, but it is hard to tell in photos how well things match. I’m 5’2″ so should I only wear them with cream pants or light pants so they don’t chop me off? I’m still in the mindset that things must match, but the fashion is different now, correct?

Thanks for you help. If you don’t have time to answer this, I understand-you must get a ton of comments:)

    1. You really can wear them with anything. And yes, pairing them with cream or white or tan will be lovely and on trend because you’re mixing things with a similar intensity. If you want to try wearing them with blue or black denim etc. just wear a shorter top or give the top a front tuck. That really takes care of that long leg line.

  5. Is the white quilted jacket with sweater sleeves that you wore on a recent walk still available? I couldn’t find a link. If it’s still available and you have time please send me the link. Thanks!
