Scripture Meditation & Memory at DFMD 2023

In my 59 years I have learned that transformation of any kind requires change. I cannot lose weight without changing my diet. I will not develop muscle without increasing my weight training efforts. I cannot grow my business by doing the same thing over and over.

And I will not become more like Jesus by persisting in my natural behavior. Even spiritual changes require effort and change multiplied by time.

Hopefully you can join me in declaring that making scripture memory and meditation a priority does indeed bring about spiritual change and development. In fact, all biblical spiritual disciplines – such as Bible reading, prayer, fasting, gathering with other believers and worship – have the potential to help us grow in Christlikeness.

But there is a fine line between a biblical spiritual discipline and a rote tradition. One goes deeper than the practice itself while the other is mechanical and superficial in its effects. One humbles us and makes us more like Christ while the other potentially puffs us up and makes us feel discouraged if we ever miss a step. And one is done with the supervision and power of the Holy Spirit while the other is done in the flesh.

I don’t want to incorporate vain traditions into my life. And I don’t want to be in bondage to self-devised rituals that initially make me feel more godly but eventually make me feel more defeated.

But I do want to make the little changes that Christ calls me to that will truly help me to grow in godliness and holiness. I want to adopt those spiritual disciplines that are grounded in God’s Word and that will over time produce the fruit of the Spirit in me.

And that’s why I’ve chosen to meditate on Psalm 92:2. Not only will I memorize (again) this paraphrased rendition of this scripture, but I’ll put it into practice. I’m making an effort to take the time to reflect on and praise God for His unfailing love each morning. And I’m pausing to thank God for the different ways I’ve seen His faithfulness each day before I lay my head on my pillow. And I’m trusting that this little spiritual discipline will result in increased peace, faith and courage in my life.

Indeed…

It is good to declare Your unfailing love in the morning, and your faithfulness in the evening.

Psalm 92:2 (paraphrased)

  3. Today my focus is Psalm 46:10 Be Still and Know That I Am God

    My sweetest sisters sudden memory loss has been diagnosed as a potential inoperable brain tumor. This is the neurosurgeons educated guess, as biopsy results are not yet received. Therefore I am holding on to every ounce of hope that the results from Mayo Clinic will hold God’s Miracle for Janice. I am headed back to the hospital but plead for your ongoing prayers at this most difficult time.
    Thank you aweet ladies and Happy Mother’s Day to you all.

      1. Oh Abbey, I am so very sorry to hear about your husband, and I will keep him in my prayers that God’s Healing Hand will cure his illness. My most sincere thanks to you and everyone here who is praying for my sister. The decision today by Janice’s doctors is to find hospice care for her final days. Her tumor is the rarest and deadliest according to her entire team of surgeons and doctors, and sadly inoperable because of where it’s invaded her brain. I am still holding on for God’s Miracle. Holding on so tight!

  6. The verse I will be meditating on is 1 John 1:9: If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

    I am so thankful that through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross, that God provides this grace. Even though my sins separate me from God, Jesus died so that my relationship with God can be restored. This love from God is immeasurable.

    I thought this is a perfect verse for Mother’s Day. In honor of my mother and prayer that I spoke and continue to speak with wisdom and faithful instruction to my stepdaughter and can be an inspiration to her.

  8. Happy Mother’s Day Kay! Part of me wants to place the apostrophe after the s so there is more of a sense of sisterhood instead of solitude. Every morning I arise early so I can watch the sun come up. That reliability of his creation gives me the impetus to move forward in my day in the most positive light (pun intended). It reminds me that I have everything I need and much, much more. With this in mind, I pray:

    This verse speaks to the very heart of how much God wants to talk with us and have us respond to his calling us aside to spend precious time with him.

  32. I chose the following verse because I tend to lay awake at night thinking about worst case scenarios or making mental lists of things that need to be done. This is not a healthy practice because I frequently do not get the sleep I need to recharge. I came across this scripture that I will quote at bedtime and whenever my mind tries to work overtime in the night.

Though I don’t have an official degree in Jewish studies from a higher learning college or university, but an avid history lover I’ve studied modern day Israel and studied Hebrew with an Orthodox Rabbi for 1.5 years. I wrote a small book over a decade ago hoping to inspire the Body of Christ to love and pray for the Jewish people and Israel. I’m reading PM Netanyahu’s new autobiography – a masterpiece while Israel has been dealing with rockets from a terrorist organization, Palestinian Islamic Jihad. So my verse for the next 2 weeks is “Yet Jerusalem says, ‘The Lord has deserted us, the Lord has forgotten us. Never! Can a mother forget her nursing child? Can she feel no love for the child she has borne? But even if that we’re possible, I would not forget you! See I have written your name on the palms of my hands. Always in my mind is a picture of Jerusalem’s walls in ruins.”

    It has been so good to have been studying about the Kings and the prophets in a Bible study about the Divided Kingdom this year. In Isaiah the Lord again and again spoke to the people of Judah to humble themselves and turn again to the Lord in warnings of coming judgement. We see God as a patient and loving God who is slow to anger, bringing hope to the nation that he will not forget his promise to keep his word to Abraham and others but also keeping a line of David as a remnant even after the destruction of Jerusalem and the exile of the people of Judah
    God has been using these words to convict me. I do not want to become hard hearted toward God.
    The verse this week for me is from Isaiah:
    But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word. Isaiah 66:2b (ESV)

It says, If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2nd Chronicles 7:14.

    I am wanting to commit to memory more “power verses” to equip me in sharing my faith! I live in a neighborhood where people are seemingly “doing life well”! They are hard workers, they love their kids, they’re involved in their lives. And because they are “decent people”….. if there’s a heaven, then they, of all people, will no doubt qualify!!! I feel like that’s their mindset! I’m not abundantly bold in talking to them! I absolutely believe TRUTH…. and yet it’s hard to be bold when they seem to have no need! So as the Holy Spirit opens opportunity, I want to be able to share easily and naturally that God has only one way to life… His Son Jesus! My being “decent” can never be sufficient! Even the fact that I think I’m decent, shows my need! From Genesis to Revelation…. it’s God’s story and we see the shadows of (if not outright proclamation of) His plan in every book— we see that it all is pointing to Jesus!

    This morning I’ve chosen two verses to add to my album. The first is also Psalm 92:2. … It is good to declare your unfailing love in the morning, and your faithfulness in the evening.

Last week I spent five days with my grandchildren while their parents were on a vacation. I took along my little plastic photo album that holds an index card with each Scripture that I have chosen to work on. My granddaughter is nine and she was excited to quiz me and help me correct any mistakes I was making in reciting my verses. She asked if she could do it also! So now she has copied all of my verses and had even learned one very quickly.
