Scripture Meditation & Memory at DFMD 2023

Hello sweet friends! I’m a little late with today’s scripture for our 2023 DFMD Scripture Meditation and Memory Challenge because we’ve been out of town this weekend. Plus, I have to confess, it has actually taken me this long to settle on my verse for these next two weeks. I’m keeping it short and simple this time, but I think this little verse packs a powerful punch.

In my reading for today in the Charles Stanley Life Principles Daily Bible, he shared Life Principle 23, which is, “You can never outgive God.” At the end of that essay, Dr. Stanley mentioned Psalm 116:12…and it stuck like glue to me.

What shall I return to the Lord     for all his goodness to me? ~ Psalm 116:12 (NIV)

The psalmist asked, “What shall I render to the Lord for all His benefits toward me? (Ps. 116:12). The question could be translated, “How can I repay the Lord for all His goodness toward me?” The answer is, we can’t. No one can because no man or woman can outgive the Lord.

I have spent no small amount of time lately reflecting on how very blessed I am. God has been so good to me, and none of it has been deserved. I am daily amazed by His benefits and the grace through which He has gifted me so much.

What shall I return to the Lord     for all his goodness to me? ~ Psalm 116:12 (NIV)

So while it is true that I cannot possibly repay our good and gracious God, I don’t ever want to take His blessings for granted. And I definitely want to give Him my heart, my hands, my feet and my voice every day as I strive to follow and obey Him. Especially for the next two weeks, and then for the remainder of the year, I will ask myself this profound question as I begin my day and even as I meditate on this scripture later in the day. “What shall I return to the Lord for all his goodness to me?” And I trust that as my heart ponders these words, He’ll show me how I can better serve and love Him that day with what I have to offer.

  2. I like the verse you chose because lately I an too focused on trials instead of blessings. Watching my husbands parkinson’s disease progression and having to put him a care facility and hoping the insurance will pay for it.

    1. Oh Beth , I am so sorry for the trials you’re going through with your husband. You will be in our prayers. Sometimes we forget to thank the Lord for all that he does for us. I love this verse Kay I will use the Bible versus this week of John 316 For God, so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life NASB

    2. Bless you, Beth. Let’s cling to the promise that indeed we cannot out give God. I’m trusting He will provide everything you need to endure – financially, physically and emotionally.

    Kay, it was fun to see your IG reel from your trip.

    My scripture was on the wall in a coffee shop, when my hubs and I were in Montreal last week, visiting our daughter/husband. Then the same scripture came up in two different devotionals I received. I’m taking it as a sign to ponder.

    “Taste and see what the Lord is good. Blessed is the one that trusts in Him.”. Psalm 34:8

    “Set a guard over my mouth Lord; Keep watch over the door of my lips.” – Psalms 141:3 (NIV)

  44. I have been spending some time in 1 John and really appreciate the writings of John: the Gospel, 1,2, and 3 John, and Revelation. (We are studying the Gospel of John in my BSF class this year, so I wanted to read other of his writings too for myself.)
    Anyway, today I am begining my meditation on another in 1 John:
    I we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. 1 John 1: 9 & 10 (ESV)

    1. Jane, I love BIble Study Fellowship (BSF) and I’m looking forward to our study in John. In July I chose John 1:7 as my memory verse:
      “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”
      I’m still considering the scripture for the next two weeks. Maybe John 1:29.

I only hope I can repay by showing love and kindness when I can and by the hard work I chose to do at the Hospital and Hospice before I Retired . God’s love for us speaks loudly from the beauty of his creation. He has made such a beautiful, wondrous world for us to live in. How could we ever repay Him for all he has given us! Thank you Kay.

    God has been so faithful in our trials to keep our eyes on him and our hands ready to help. Our grandson, Chase, has severe autism and encephalitis and we recently moved back to CA to be closer to Chase and the family. THIS is not a trial – it is a blessing to us. However it is not without stress or difficulty. So thankful for God’s presence and his promises to never leave or forsake us.

    The Lord sent Samuel to Jesse’s house to anoint the next King of Israel, Samuel assumed Jesse’s older and physically fit sons were the next king as they passed one by one. But the Lord told Samuel that He looks at the heart, not what’s on the outside. After the 7 older sons were rejected by God, Jesse’s youngest son, David the sheep herder, was brought and the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him; for this is the one!”

    It is nice to have a stylish wardrobe and the latest hairstyle. I enjoy my pedicures. However, I always want to remember that I need to work harder on my heart than on my outside appearance. More importantly, I ask God to remind me to focus on others’ hearts rather than their appearance.

  58. Hi! I heard a sermon a couple of weeks ago on James 1. I’ve continued to ponder the message. I’ve decided to meditate on James 1:22. It says, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” (NIV) It’s good to listen or read his word but we also need to apply these words to our lives. Sometimes that asks for us to do something. This is my prayer that the Holy Spirit would make clear to me the “doing” part. Then I’d follow through and “do.”

  73. I am joining in a little late this time. But honestly, it is a blessing at this point to be able to read what everyone else has posted! I have decided to wait on the verse I had chosen because Heather D’s verses are exactly what I need today and the next few days. I will be taking care of 4 of my grandchildren while my daughter-in-law has a third surgery for her stage 4 brain cancer (glioblastoma). My son will be with her at the hospital the next few days. The doctors are trying to buy her more time by continuing to remove tumor as it spreads, but she will not survive this aggressive cancer. So I have fears on every side — the immediate fear of taking care of her and ultimately losing her, the fear of how my son will ever manage with 4 children by himself, the fears for each of these precious children who will lose their mother at a young age, and a selfish fear because I want to do so much for them but my own health is often limiting. So I believe thru this blog I was divinely directed to the immediate help I need today:

    I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.
    Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.

  77. A day late to the party, but better late than never 🙂
    I’m keeping on in Psalm 40. I like to memorize whole Psalms, then I have all the context and complete thoughts the psalmist was aiming for. Not that I understand it all, surely not all at once. I memorized Psalm 19 once and kept asking the Lord for some clarification on how part one and part two fit together. About a year and a half later the Spirit spoke to me and opened my eyes to capture how they were connected. And soo…I continue with psalm 40:16 (a repeat as I don’t have it quite yet memorized) “But may all who seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee; may those who love thy salvation say continually, “Great is the Lord!””

  78. Chris’s verse really resonated with me. After a wonderful vacation with my children and grandchildren, I was the fourth in our group to come down with Covid. For the past couple of weeks I have been very sick. Covid also unleashed an autoimmune disease that had been kept somewhat at bay. I am claiming this verse now:

    “Oh, Lord, my God, I cried unto you for help and you have healed me.”
