I don’t know about you, but I’m getting exciting about celebrating the 250th birthday of the United States of America. I’ve been out of the country all week (if things have gone as planned), but I put together a little style inspiration and gathered some great red, white and blue styles for us to consider as we approach our nation’s big birthday in July.

I remember when we celebrated the Bi-Centennial in 1976. I actually went to Washington D.C. twice that year! I saw the historical monuments and places first with my friend Michelle on a 6th grade bus trip. Later that summer, my family drove to Washington, as well as Williamsburg and Philadelphia. Talk about celebrating the Bi-Centennial in a big way!

Do you remember what you did to celebrate in 1976? I’m sure many of my readers, like me, were either children or teens or young adults. Share with me in the comments if you remember doing anything special that memorable year.

I think it would be fun to pull out all the stops this year. I plan to decorate my home with a patriotic theme as soon as I return from England. And I’ll leave those red, white and blue decorations in place through the summer.

But I’ve also been scouting out red, white and blue styles for summer outfits. I think the key is to pair the more patriotic pieces, such as this fun sweater or this sweet tee with something more subdued, like denim shorts or a simple white skirt. But then again, it’s a celebration! So I’m sure I’ll also load on the color at times.

Here are just a few red, white and blue style boards to get your creative juices flowing. And then I have a shopping boutique filled with possibilities.

skirt and top

This simple skirt would pair with so many things in your closet for a feminine, patriotic outfit. And that bag could be such a fun one to carry all summer.

Even on the most casual summer days you can show a little patriotism with these easy pairings.

Matched sets are so on trend, and this one looks fresh, feminine, but also perfectly appropriate for women over 50.

Honestly, you’re going to be able to create so many festive red, white and blue outfits with just a few of the pieces from the boutique below paired with items in your current closet. Which are your favorites? Be sure to scroll down in the boutique. This is a big one!

Thanks for stopping in for a little style inspiration. I’m sure I’ll share a few “live” photos soon with some additional ideas for wearing red, white and blue this summer. Have a great weekend.

Fear is never our friend. Sometimes we make decisions out of fear. But fear and anxiety cause us to make faulty decisions. The Bible tells us that God never gives a spirit of fear. He operates through a spirit of love and soundness of mind. So if we allow fear to dictate our path, we are actually allowing the enemy of our souls to rule our decisions.

Today when fear begins to compel you to turn to the left or the right, take that fear to God. Ask Him to unwrap it for you, exposing the lies that have fed it. Ask Him to give you soundness of mind concerning the decision you must make or the path He has called you to walk. And trust that, in His love, He will walk you safely through the best course of action.

Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people.  ~ Luke 22:1-2

  1. I remember the bicentennial very well. I was 15 and my brother and I went with our friends to the Boston Esplanade with Arthur Fiedler conducting the pops. There were over 250,000 people there! We arrived early around 4 and laid a blanket on the grass – by 9:00 we had been squeezed toward the edge of the Charles River being eaten alive with mosquitos! We did see amazing fireworks but I have never, ever, ever been to the Esplanade since. I do love July 4th and always see LOCAL small town fireworks.

  2. Know you are having fun in London. I have my kitchen in red, white, and blue all year. Of course, I add a few pieces for Christmas season in December. I am also excited to celebrate our 250 Anniversary. I will be wearing more red, white, and blue as the Spring and Summer progresses.

  3. May of 1976 two friends (from New Jersey) and I (from Kentucky) took a tour of the colonies in a car with a pop up camper, Kool-aid, instant oatmeal and a road atlas! We visited Boston (red brick tour with all the sites), Yale, Concord, Plymouth, Maine, Rhode Island, Williamsburg, the Alcott’s home, FDR’s home, etc. I was 23 and I can still remember how excited I was to see all these historic places! 🇺🇸

  4. I remember the bicentennial well also. My family had just moved to the Presidio of San Francisco and were staying in guest quarters with other military families on July 4th. We all gathered in the living area to watch the national fireworks. Everything was red, white and blue that year. We had a red, white and blue cooler with matching thermos and my daughter had a red, white and blue Fisher Price tyke bike. Question: I didn’t see a source for the red checked matching short set.

  5. Let’s see I was in 8th grade and don’t remember a thing about it. Lol I’ve never been much of a 4 th of July girl. I line to wear the colors for that day but in a sudtle way. No flags or anything. Can’t wait to hear about your trip. I don’t have instagram so haven’t heard a thing yet. Hope it’s been a great time.

  6. In England 1976 is known as “The year of the drought”. No rain for 7 weeks in the summer and a water shortage. I was 17, on holiday in Cornwall, the temperature was in the 90s and the music was great!

  7. I remember July 4th 1976 very well. I was 12 years old and we were in Philadelphia to see Queen Elizabeth II. Still remember what she wore. A navy and white striped dress.
