Elevated Summer Style Formula with Jeans

Happy Monday! Last week I shared a little trend challenge in my YouTube video, 3 Fashion Trends Women Over 50 MUST Try. Today I’m wearing two of those trends and sharing a little elevated summer style formula with jeans. Now I wouldn’t wear this every day during the summer…if I could help it! But if you have those situations where you need to elevate your look a bit while still keeping it casual, this formula works for me every time.

Elevated Summer Style Formula with Jeans

In the past I’ve frequently attended professional conferences during the summer, things like speakers’ conferences and writers’ retreats. Maybe you attend curriculum conferences, professional or avocational conventions, continuing education classes or other gatherings where you want to look pulled together and sharp, but still summer-casual.

Elevated Summer Style Formula with Jeans

You can stay comfortable and casual in a pair of modern jeans (similar) and a classic t-shirt, but really pull these basics together with a few steps. First, add some modern or even slightly edgy footwear. You definitely want to opt for comfort, but these black sports sandals from Everlane also look sharp and fresh. I chose them over loafers or other closed to shoes simply because they do have that modern vibe and a summer feel. These sandals are very comfortable (even more comfortable than my Tevas) and they run true to size. Everlane has white sports sandals marked down 25% for a limited time.

Comfort Sandals and Jeans

I purchased my Kut from the Kloth high waist raw hem straight leg jeans in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale and they’re sold out. But these Kut from the Kloth jeans are very similar, with just a touch of distressing and a lighter wash. I find them to run true to size; I’m wearing an 8.

Blazer

The next step is to add a blazer. This Easy Blazer from Everlane also comes in a beautiful toasted coconut that looks like a golden camel color to me. It’s a knit blazer with an unstructured shape and relaxed detailing, so it has that laid-back vibe you want when pairing a jacket with jeans and a tee, but it still helps you look pulled together and smart. I’m wearing an 8 and it has a very generous fit.

Add a Blazer

I added minimal jewelry to my look, opting for my Elisa multi strand necklace from Kendra Scott and my brushed gold teardrop earrings, along with my Nordgreen Native watch. Wearing a watch is always an easy way to elevate your style. Use code KAYHRMS at Nordgreen to save 15% on your order.

Black Shoulder Bag

The next step to this simple elevated summer style formula is to add a sharp bag. This vegan leather shoulder bag from Social Threads is currently sold out, but they’ll be restocking. And they have lots of fun straps you can switch out on it.

Blazer and Jeans

Finally, don’t forget to use a couple of style hacks to pull your look together. You could add a belt, flip your collar up in the back or simply add a front tuck and cuff up the sleeves of your blazer like I did.

Elevated Summer Style

Not only would I wear this simple but elevated summer style to a conference or casual convention, but I’d wear it to lunch with friends or to a movie with my husband. And this look will also work well as we transition into fall.

Thanks so much for stopping in for a little style inspiration. I have to tell you, this is my least favorite time of the year to take photos. It’s hot! And you can probably tell from today’s photos that I was hot. But I actually wore this outfit shopping all day Friday and felt great in it. So I can tell you from experience that it really works as an elevated summer style. Plus, it’s just fun to wear!

Have a great day!

Blessed for My Day

Has the Lord burdened your heart with something recently? Maybe you’ve heard about a friend who is going through a particularly trying time. Maybe you’re concerned about a wayward child or grandchild. Or perhaps you’ve become increasingly troubled about something you see on the news and in the paper. I think these days most of us, if we have tender hearts at all, feel burdened by something that is beyond our ability to change or fix.

But God grants us these heightened senses of awareness and burden for a reason. We are to bring these burdens to Him. I encourage you to take the time to sit with that burden today. Don’t be too hasty to shake it off. Instead, allow it to pierce your heart, to drive you to your knees, to pull your into God’s Word for wisdom and encouragement, perhaps even to compel you to fast.

When I heard these words, I sat down and wept and mourned for days; and I was fasting and praying before the God of heaven. ~ Nehemiah 1:4

  1. Dear Kay,
I’ve been enjoying your posts for quite a while now but this is the first time I have commented.
Your Blessed for the Day was spot on with me today. I enjoy all of your posts and especially like your love of Our Lord! God bless you for your inspirational messages!

  2. I like your comment about wearing a watch to elevate a look. I love wearing a watch on my non-dominant arm. I stopped wearing a watch in order to wear a fitbit to track steps. Hmm. Any ideas?

    1. Ooh. I’m jealous. I really want it but already have a similar one. I’ve seen someone else wearing it and it looked so good.

  3. Good morning Kay. Cute elevated look But I cannot wear jeans in the summer. They’re just too hot for me. Just came back from vacation and took a couple lightweight blazers just in case, but didn’t even wearing them but nice knowing I had them. I just wore shorts, Short sleeve tops and sundresses. It’s supposed to be hot here in Minnesota the next week again. We’ve had a hot summer. I did enjoy wearing linen on my vacation to the Black Hills, mount Rushmore and Crazyhorse, customer par, bad lands, etc. We went all over in that area and saw so much of God’s Creative country as well as the other sites.
    Nice BFMD.

  4. Kay, this is a great elevated casual outfit. It has been really hot and humid in my part of GA (the heat index is expected to be in the triple digits today), so I have avoided wearing my jeans. For Larry’s doctors appointment and grocery buying tomorrow, I am wearing black shorts and a v-neck black tee. To elevate the look, I will be wearing my snake print long ruana, black espadrille Vionic flat sandals, and a short blingy cross necklace. The BFMD is spot on to an extended family matter for us. I wish you a wonderful day!

  5. I’m receiving your emails! I made a password but it will not except it, guess I forgot it. I’m trying to get in to see the peach pound cake. Can you help me? would also like the leather band watch but my wrist is so small that I don’t know if comes that small. I’m size 2 p in Talbots, 5’1’’ weight 100 lbs Thank you

    1. Hi Joyce. Thanks for subscribing. The password for the Subscriber Freebies is in all of the emails I send. It’s located toward the bottom. I think the watch band gets pretty small. They are made for women’s wrists. But maybe check the measurements?

  6. Kay, I really liked last week’s video, 3 Fashion Trends Women Over 50 Must Try. Your outfit that day and the one today are simple yet chic, as Marie-Anne Lecoeur would say. Ha!
Your BFMD message hits so close to home. Thank you.
I’m wondering if you will doing a blog post, or part of one, on what to look for when choosing a classic trench coat? In my search I have seen one by Everlane that I like. It has a casual look, yet could be dressed up, and the fabric drapes beautifully. Unfortunately, it comes without a lining. I see in some of the reviews that it arrived all rolled up in a ball and wrinkled. Doesn’t leave me with a good feeling about purchasing. Suggestions and recommendations from you will be most appreciated.

    1. Hmm. Everything I’ve received from Everlane has been well packaged and I’ve liked everything. But I love my Ralph Lauren trench jacket and my Talbots trench coats. The Talbots coats are not raincoats but the RL is. Talbots doesn’t have a classic color available right now but I bet they will this fall. I’ve also heard good things about the Sam Edelman trench coat https://shopstyle.it/l/bwFCQ and trench jacket https://shopstyle.it/l/bwFDg both of which are in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale and are rain repellent.

  7. Great casual look. I don’t wear a blazer but I have jackets that are casual that I pop on for this look. I love a secure sandal. I gave my sliders away because I just felt uncomfortable in them. Theses sandals are wonderful.
BFMD hit home for me. Doing a hard thing of writing a will. But we all do need to get that out of the way.

  8. Hi Kay,
The elevated tee-shirt with jeans is very youthful! It looks like fun! Thank you for this post and the Blessed For My Day, many seem to be in need of compassion and prayer today.

  9. You could have fooled me, Kay, you don’t look hot at all! Jeans and a blazer are way too hot to be wearing in Houston in the daytime, but we could wear that in the evening , when it cools down to 85!
I love reading your BFMD and Abby ‘s great message each morning! You’re a welcome inspiration in the fashion blog world. Thank you

    1. Ahh, thanks so much Susie. That is very encouraging. And I think Abby is doing a fantastic job with the devotionals. I’m so glad you’re enjoying them too. ?

  10. Except for the movies, or going to Trader Joe’s which is always freezing my jeans take a rest for the summer, but this is definitely an outfit I’d wear and do wear the other three seasons. I’d wear it to dinner. For quite a while I’ve been wearing unfinished hem jeans, I often cut jeans to get them the right length. Here recently I wonder, at 62 if I should give them up? I’m also looking for a less structured black blazer to wear in addition to a structured black blazer. I find Evelane’s sizing to be unusual.

    1. Hi Robyn. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. This blazer fit me true to size. I think they’re getting a little consistent with their sizing.
