My Morning Skincare for Women Over 50

February 22, 2022

Each February I traditionally have a beauty week in which I share my skincare and makeup application routines. This week I’m not going to share a makeup routine, but watch for a BIG makeup application tips video tomorrow at my YouTube Channel. And today I’m sharing my morning skincare routine for women over 50 that I’m currently loving for great results.

Morning Skincare Routine for Women Over 50

Like most of you, I tend to settle into my skincare routines by happenchance. I’m always on the search for the best products that I can afford and that can fit into my routine in a way that feels good to me. Honestly, I want a lot of bang for my buck, and I don’t want to have to fuss with too many products or procedures or steps. I want to tend to my skincare concerns – which largely revolve around signs of aging and threats of skin cancer at this point – and then I want to get out of the bathroom and on with my day.

So my skincare has changed a good bit in the last year because I’ve met with my dermatologist, tried some new products offered by a friend, tried out some new brands at the recommendation of other influencers and sought out some answers to some persisting problems.

My Skin Concerns

Let me quickly review the skin issues I try to work on with my morning skincare routine. I’m 58 (tomorrow!) and I’ve had one run-in with basal cell carcinoma, which I had removed through a Mohs surgery in November. I have dry skin, but it’s generally not sensitive at all. I’m getting lots of lines around my mouth and eyes that almost look like scar tissue. Anyone??? And I’m also currently using a prescribed 5% Flourouracil cream on a small spot on my nose that has been diagnosed as pre-cancerous.

My Scar and Precancerous Spot

Yes, I have makeup on in the photo above, so that is covering the scar some. But I am pleased with the progress I’ve seen. Hang with me and I’ll share what I’m using on it.

Let’s get going on that morning skincare routine for women over 50.

Oh, and I’m only calling it a “morning skincare routine for women over 50” for search engine optimization (SEO). Just keeping it real. I want other women over 50 to be able to find this post in website searches, so I need to use that term repeatedly. But this is certainly not a definitive skincare routine for all women over 50. It’s just what’s working for me and my unique skin concerns.

Morning Skincare Routine Products

Cleansing

I’m a firm believer in cleansing your face daily, especially to remove makeup in the evening. But even in the morning I like to start the day with clean skin. So most mornings I wash it in the shower with just warm water and a soft wash cloth, but if I don’t take a bath (because I took one the night before) I use the Elemis Cleansing Balm (not pictured above) to cleanse my skin.

Elemis Cleansing Balm
Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm at Nordstrom or HERE from Elemis

The Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm (also from Elemis directly) is a silky, creamy balm that looks somewhat like lemon curd and feels rich and oily. But it smells a-maze-ing and leaves your skin feeling so soft and moisturized and healthy. You can actually apply it three ways: as a rich balm, lathered into a froth with water or thick like a mask. After working a small dime size dollop into my skin with warm water, I use a warm, wet wash cloth to press it into my skin and then gently wipe it off. This is such a luxurious step in my morning (and evening) routine. I absolutely love this silky soft balm.

You can get many of these products that I’m sharing at a variety of retailers, of course. But right now just through February 28th, Nordy club members can get 2x points at Nordstrom on beauty buys. So it’s a good time to purchase many of these items at Nordstrom, especially since they always offer free shipping and returns.

Applying an Antioxidant

I always apply the Timeless Skin Care 10% Vitamin C serum in my evening skincare routine. But some days I apply it in the mornings, too. I’d say probably two or three mornings per week. Vitamin C restores & neutralizes environmental stressors that can accelerate the signs of aging. Plus, this serum includes a 10% concentration of L-ascorbic acid, a highly effective skin antioxidant and collagen builder. Topically applied vitamin C also brightens skin, builds collagen & evens out skin tone. And this Timeless formulation is enhanced with Vitamin E and Ferulic Acid to correct hyperpigmentation and discoloration, and promote healthy skin turnover.

Vitamin C
Timeless Skin Care 10% Vitamin C serum

The Timeless Skin Care 10% Vitamin C serum should be kept in a cool place, preferably a refrigerator. But we keep our house so cool that I think it’s just fine in my bathroom. It comes out through an innovative pump system that keeps the fragile vitamin complex from ruining. I just use two small squirts of the Timeless Skin Care 10% Vitamin C serum, dab it on my face thoroughly ( no need to rub it in) and let it set a bit before the next step.

I break my skincare routines up a bit, allowing each step to dry or set up before moving to the next step. During these “breaks” I do things like brush my teeth or put on some of my clothing.

Massaging My Scar with Silicone Gel

My dermatologist suggested that I use a gel on my scar after my Mohs surgery. She said most gels do pretty well, but that they’ve seen the best results with gels that contain silicone. So I massage the Eau Thermale Avene Cicalfate+ Scar Gel into my scar morning and night.

Scar Gel
Eau Thermale Avene Cicalfate+ Scar Gel

The Eau Thermale Avene Cicalfate+ Scar Gel is a thick gel that goes on smoothly and absorbs fairly quickly, so sometimes I actually massage several dollops into the scar. The nurse suggested I massage the scar for five minutes each day. But I confess, I generally don’t spend that much time on it. I have noticed acceptable and significant improvement in my scar as time has progressed. I’ve also started apply the Eau Thermale Avene Cicalfate+ Scar Gel to an old scar on my arm and I’m even seeing noticeable change there.

Eye Cream

Because I like to do my eye makeup first in my cosmetics application, I go ahead and apply my eye cream next. That way it can set up before applying my eyeshadow primer.

Eye Cream
Tarte Shape Tape Eye Cream

I’ve been using the Tarte Shape Tape Eye Cream for a couple of months now and I like the results. You push the milky cream out of the end of the wand and then use the stainless steel roller ball to apply directly to the skin over the orbital bone. It feels so cool and refreshing. The formula is infused with vegan squalane, vitamin B5, sodium hyaluronate, vitamin E and plumping peptides.

And I’ve noticed that the lines around my eyes have diminished some and my eye makeup is going on and staying on really nicely these days. Of course, that could be due to the combination of this Tarte Shape Tape Eye Cream with the Urban Decay Anti-Aging Primer Potion and the Jane Iredale Naturally Matte Eyeshadow Kit I’m also using these days. (LOVE that Jane Iredale Naturally Matte Eyeshadow Kit! Applies so smoothly and easily and blends well, too.)

Anti-Aging Serum

Next I apply just a couple of pumps of Elemis Pro-Collagen Super Serum Elixir (also available from Elemis directly) to my face and neck. Powered by a unique blend of intelligent bio-actives, including anti-aging tripeptides, African birch bark, red seaweed and Padina Pavonica, this silky, somewhat oily elixir leaves my skin feeling firmer with improved elasticity. It also contains hyaluronic acid and omega-rich camelina oil, which provide superior moisturization throughout the day.

Daytime Serum

I really have noticed a surprisingly significant difference in the elasticity of my skin as well as marked decrease in lines and wrinkles. It’s hard to say which elements of my skincare routine are producing the most results, but I definitely think this daytime elixir is key to the improvements I’ve seen.

I purchased the Elemis products I’m using just before Christmas in a significantly discounted “gift set.” These are fairly pricey products, but I’ve noticed that Elemis does indeed run specials on them quite frequently. My set was something like this, but not exactly.

Moisturizing and Hydrating

After letting the Elemis elixir set a bit (usually while applying my eye makeup), I’m then ready to apply my daytime moisturizer. A sweet friend gifted me this Paula’s Choice Moisture Boost Hydrating Treatment Cream for Christmas. My friend Leah has the most beautiful skin and she’s been using Paula’s Choice products exclusively for several years. So she asked if I’d like to try some.

Moisturizer

When I first squirted a little bit of this Moisture Boost Hydrating Treatment Cream onto my fingers, I was a little skeptical. It’s so extremely light. Honestly, it just didn’t feel impressive. But I’ve heard that other brands (maybe some of the ones I’m using even!) put a lot of extra, unnecessary ingredients into their products just for that reason – to make them feel more impressive than they really are.

But this Moisture Boost Hydrating Treatment Cream has proven to be a winner. I’ve been using it since the middle of December, and I love it. Unlike some other products I’ve used in the past, it doesn’t build up on my skin and then crumb up as I apply my foundation. Instead, it goes on very light, absorbs quickly, but then obviously keeps my normally dry skin feeling very hydrated and protected all day.

Protecting from the Sun

I’ve always worn sunscreen, but usually in my moisturizer or makeup foundation. But since I’ve had my couple of scares with skin cancer, I’ve decided to be more in control of my sun protection by breaking the steps apart. In the past, if I relied on the sunscreen to be in my foundation I might would have neglected to wear any sun protection on days I went without makeup. So now I’m using the CeraVe Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen in their 30 Face Sheer Tint formulation.

Sunscreen
CeraVe Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen in their 30 Face Sheer Tint formulation

A little bit of the CeraVe Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen goes a long way. In fact, that little dollop shown above is probably too much for my face and neck. This mineral sunscreen contains Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide for full coverage and protection. But, unlike most mineral sunscreens, this sheer tint formula will not leave your face white. Instead the soft tint blends in beautifully with any complexion color and leaves your skin looking healthy and radiant. I do indeed wear it alone some days, going without my foundation.

I’ve not found the CeraVe Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen to interfere at all, however, with my foundation application either. In fact, after letting the sunscreen set just a couple of minutes, my foundation goes on very smoothly and evenly.

Because my dermatologist has insisted that I use an SPF 50 product on my nose while I’m doing the Florouracil treatment, I’ve been applying the Cetaphil 50 Sheer Mineral Sunscreen Lotion for Face to my nose. But it does indeed stay a little white after application. I had hoped it would be sheer enough to wear on my whole face, and I will when I’m on the beach. But otherwise I will stick with the CeraVe Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen.

Morning Skincare Routine for Women Over 50

And that’s a wrap!

That’s my simple morning skincare for women over 50.I’m outta there! Well, I’m on to applying my makeup anyhow.

I did want to mention that I ordered and have been using the Olay Wrinkle Correction Serum with B3+Peptides recently, too. But, because I wanted to use the Elemis consistently if I was going to recommend it here, I’ve only used the Olay serum occasionally, here and there, just enough to know that it goes on nicely and doesn’t irritate my skin at all. But it is a fraction of the price of the Elemis serum, so I wanted to mention it. And if you use code WINWIN on any of the Olay products I’ve included in the shopping widget below, you’ll see significant savings in your cart.

Blessed for My Day

If you are standing on shaky round today, please know that there is still One who is rock solid. Your God is faithful and trustworthy. You can depend on Him to fulfill His promises and to keep His Word. He will not desert you nor turn His back on you, but He will in fact run toward you, pursue you and keep you secure.

When we know and focus on these truths we are able to live our day with more confidence and security. That confidence compels us forward to accomplish the goals He has set before us. We are then victorious and faithful stewards of the gifts and potential and appointments He grants us. Yes, it absolutely makes a difference when you determine to remember that God is faithful.

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
    his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
    great is your faithfulness.
“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul,
“therefore I will hope in him.” ~ Lamentations 3:22-24

  1. Good morning Kay! Hope uoubare enjoying your vacation. I have also switched to mineral sunscreens. Two that I like are Elta MD spf 50. I use the sport when I am going to be working outside or swimming. I also like Drmtlgy tinted moisturizer spf 46. Neither leave your skin white. Remember to use a half teaspoon on your face.

    1. I am 71 with adult acne, T-Zone mainly, but just outer cheeks are normal. No one ever hits or speaks about this. I guess so many have dry skin at this age except me. Any suggestions?

  2. Enjoy your day in sunny Florida. As promised it is snowing here in Minnesota.
I have been using Elemis products for months now. I use the Elemis pro-collagen for neck and decollete balm, Elemis dynamic resurfacing day cream SPF30 and Elemis pro-collagen night cream also. I know these products are spendy, last awhile because you use sparingly. Can also get these products at Ulta. I will have to try the daytime elixir and the CeraVe sunscreen. Yes, we must remember that God is always with us no matter what. Have a blessed day.

  3. I’ve had a few Moh’s surgeries and have found massaging in a few drops of Bio-Oil a few times a day has just about made the scars disappear. You would have to know where to look to find them.

  4. Happy birthday!
Fun to hear what you use.
I alternate between Juice Beauty products and Ennessa. They are organic and pricey, but I like them and they last a long time.

  5. Kay, the Timeless 10% Vit C is up to 50% off for a limited time. I’ve been using the 20% for awhile and really like it. I’m a long-time Paula’s Choice user and the products are very good. The tray for your skin care is fabulous! Just my colors. Thank you for sharing your routine and enjoy your vacation.

  6. Very helpful, Kay! I especially liked seeing a simple list of each step of a morning pre-makeup routine in the proper order. Happy birthday!⚘?

  7. Why did you stop using PROVEN skincare? I am always looking for products for my 67 year old face, so following all your advice. Thank you for all you do.

    1. No reason really. I’m just constantly invited to try new products and so I do. But I really enjoyed the Proven products and got great results from them, too.
