Happy Friday! With the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale now open to EVERYONE, I thought it would be a fun time to share with you two fall jackets I picked up in this mega pre-fall sale. These are casual jackets you can easily elevate to stylish and chic both sooner and later.
Utility jackets will continue to trend this year as we reach for those pieces that feel functional and comfortable but also stylish. This Caslon utility jacket is crafted with a stretch organic cotton blend so it feels amazing – so soft and worn in, but still crisp with a little bit of stretch. I love that it snaps in the front and features lots of pockets. But none of those pockets add bulk.
The Caslon utility jacket has an internal drawstring so you can easily cinch it to your liking. It’s not lined, so it’s great for cool fall days. The jacket runs true to size for a roomy, relaxed fit that you can easily layer over one or two other pieces. I’m wearing my usual size medium. Oh, and the jacket also comes in classic navy, soft pink and a trending rust spice.
You could certainly wear the Caslon utility jacket over a simple tee or tank, especially for early fall. And it will fit nicely over something more substantial like a sweatshirt or sweater, too. But I’ve paired with a crisp cotton poplin button up shirt for a very on trend look.
This Open Edit button up shirt is 100% cotton and runs true to size for a more slim, figure-skimming fit. If you prefer an oversized fit, size up. I’m wearing my usual medium. I especially appreciate the button cuffs on this button up shirt. The cuffs are so polished and crisp, making it easy to turn them up for a more styled appearance. But you can also easily roll them up or just scrunch and go. Here’s a similar option in a nice light stripe. And here’s an Open Edit button up shirt in a relaxed fit.
I’ve accessorized the look very simply with my gold brushed teardrop earrings and this great sterling silver herringbone chain necklace I picked up in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. Both pieces also come in silver tones. The earrings feel substantial but are lightweight. And the herringbone chain necklace feels like good quality and promises to be a regular in my jewelry collection.
I finished off this casual jeans outfit with my Converse platform sneakers that I purchased in last year’s Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. This year they have the same sneakers, but in cool canvas and with white grommets rather than the gold. I love the slight elevation of these platform sneakers and the retro vibe. They do run large. I sized down a full size and they’re still pleasantly roomy. Here’s a great option in leather in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.
I’m wearing the same jeans in both of these outfits. They’re by Nordstrom’s house brand, Caslon. This was their first year to have jeans in the sale, and they’ve sold out once, but have just recently been restocked. For the great price these distressed, slim, high waist, straight leg jeans are listed at, they are pretty amazing. They feel great on and are perfect for casual days. I tried on my normal size 8 in the store and they fit well. But I decided to size up to a 10 for a more relaxed, boyfriend vibe.
You also might check out the similar Caslon raw hem high waist straight leg jeans that don’t have the distressing. I actually would have preferred those, but since they had these in the store I went with them. Those raw hem straight leg jeans have such a nice medium dark wash and I imagine they fit similarly. Caslon also has a high waist flare leg jean worth checking out. I tried those in the store, but they were a little short on my 5’8″ frame.
I also styled my Caslon distressed straight leg jeans with this great Treasure & Bond belted faux leather jacket. I love this trending button up, chocolate brown jacket. It wears like a shirt jacket with a removable belt.
In fact, you could even wear the faux leather jacket as a top later on, maybe with a tank underneath for security. But I tried it on and it definitely works that way. Even though it’s not genuine leather, this jacket is available at a great price considering the quality of the construction as well as the feel and appearance of the faux leather. I think it’s such a smart option for fall.
Under the faux leather jacket I’m wearing a Nordstrom cashmere crewneck sweater. I have a v-neck cashmere sweater from Nordstrom in this same color and get so many compliments on it. I think it’s such a great neutral. The beige oatmeal light heather cashmere crewneck sweater is a little on the lighter side, but it’s not so thin that I would need to wear anything under it for modesty. It’s actually perfect for three seasons. I accidentally came home from the store with a size large in this sweater, but I think it runs true to size.
The Madewell desert dune leather belt I’m wearing in some of the photos is one of my favorite purchases from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. It’s definitely more creamy beige than the golden color you see on the retail page, but I think this color will be very versatile, especially since I plan to wear lots of brown this fall and winter. I’m wearing my usual size medium very comfortably in the leather belt.
I’m wearing the same herringbone chain necklace in this look, but I switched out my earrings for these cubic zirconia earrings from Nordstrom. These classy studs are also available with platinum hardware.
But I think the key to this tone on tone outfit is that I finished it off with these great Kyla flats in blue mineral. My Nordstrom stylist suggested these blue shoes, noting that they would perfectly accent all the brown I plan to add to my wardrobe this year. And don’t you just love that bulky antique finished rope detail? I’m wearing my usual size in these Kyla flats, but I see now that they suggest sizing up 1/2 size. I think that might be a good idea. And these Calvin Klein flats in blue would be a good option if you prefer a shoe with a back.
I have really enjoyed shopping the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale this year. I think they have some great styles at significant discounts. This annual pre-fall sale is somewhat of an appreciation sale for Nordstrom cardholders, but it is open now to everyone.
Remember, shipping is always free at Nordstrom.com, and they make returns easy and free, too. And if you notice that one of your items is available in store near you, you can order online and pick up at the store, usually the same day. The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale lasts through the rest of July and prices go up to their original price on August 1st. But I do suggest you shop smart and fast if you’ve already seen some things you like. Inventory has been great this year, but items will sell out fast.
Thanks so much for stopping in today. I hope you’ve enjoyed this little fall preview!

Blessed for My Day
Can you imagine the early apostles’ dismay as they watched the risen Lord ascend into heaven? But indeed, Jesus had told them that if He left to prepare a place for them He would return for them. And, just as importantly, He assured them that He would send a helper, the Holy Spirit. On Pentecost those early believers received the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. They were then empowered, equipped, encouraged and enabled to spread the good news of Salvation like wildfire. It’s really quite amazing. The church took off over two thousand years ago and is vibrant today solely because of Holy Spirit. In fact, as Jesus Himself had stated, it was indeed better for each believer to have the Holy Spirit within than for Jesus to continue to walk on this earth.
The Holy Spirit within is such an amazing gift. We are encouraged in God’s Word not to quench or grieve the Holy Spirit. When we disobey or resist Holy Spirit’s leadership in our lives, we shorten His arm, so to speak. And we shortchange ourselves, too. Yesterday I heard a Christian speaker who said, “We quench the Holy Spirit when He says ‘yes’ and we say ‘no.’ We grieve the Holy Spirit when He says ‘no’ and we say ‘yes.'” That resonated with me. Don’t get hung up on the semantics of that teaching. The Bible uses both of those words somewhat interchangeably. But it helped me to realize that whether I’m stepping out ahead of God, doing what He has told me not to do and not waiting upon Him or I’m resisting His urges and hanging back without doubt, I disappoint God’s Spirit and restrict His work in my life. I thought you might want to chew on that phraseology, too.
Do not quench the Spirit. ~ 1 Thessalonians 5:19
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. ~ Ephesians 4:30
