Winter Road Trip – What to Wear in the Car

One of the things I love about living in Arizona is discovering new, interesting places to visit within a day’s drive. I’m all over a good road trip! What about you? While, depending on the length of the trip, I may take jeans or slacks to wear when we reach our destination, I prefer to wear something really comfortable if I’m going to be in the car for more than a couple of hours. So today I’m sharing my winter road trip picks for what to wear in the car.

Winter Road Trip - What to Wear
Black sunglasses // Pure Jill slim leg pants // Pure Jill harmony wrap-style top // infinity scarf (similar) // reptile embossed slip on sneakers // Weekender travel bag (my pattern has been discontinued)

These Pure Jill separates from J.Jill are amazingly soft and easy to wear. When I’m in the car all day I want to wear something that looks presentable and put together, but I want clothing that feels very comfortable. Neither of these pieces is heavy or exceptionally warm, and that’s the way I like my road trip outfit, since we keep the car fairly warm. But I did slip a tank on under this top for added warmth since I was going to be posing for pictures outside.

I had originally been drawn to the soft pink version of this top, and I still think it is so pretty. But the green looks good with my light green eyes, so I chose it. The top also comes in black and soft grey heather.

Sometimes James and I take one-day road trips, too. A few years ago we went to the Whitewater Draw wildlife area where thousands of Sandhill Cranes migrate during the winter months. It was amazing and sobering watching all of those large birds fly into the draw in V formation. This would be a great ensemble to wear on a day trip like that.

By the way, I wear a small in these J.Jill separates. And I really think I might should have tried on the x-small top. Their clothes tend to run a little large in my experience.

When we’re going to be in the car for more than an hour, I generally take my iPad mini to read. Don’t you like my pretty Vera Bradley cover for my tablet? It’s a retired pattern, but they have so many others to choose from. And, driving through the desert, it’s all the more important to take plenty of water along, so I carry my Swell water bottle.

These reptile embossed slip-on sneakers are by Naturalizer so, naturally, they’re very comfortable. They also come in several shades in the perforated version of this sneaker. I think they run true to size.

For the trip home, I’d wear the same comfortable pants, but throw on a simple t-shirt and cardigan. Also this outfit is a little more versatile in case it warms up and you don’t need the long sleeves. By the way, these pants comes in other shades as well. And this cardigan runs quite large, so definitely size down. I’m wearing a medium, and I definitely need a small. It’s marked down and still available in some beautiful colors. It’s wonderfully soft!

My Weekender travel bag is no longer available in this particular pattern, but they have so many other lovely ones to choose from. My daughter and I both have one of these bags, and we use them so very often. They’re perfect for road trips because you’re able to cram them into tight places and they’re easy to tote.

What do you wear when you hit the road? For that matter, have you taken an interesting road trip lately? I’d love to hear about your adventures!

Blessed for My Day

What do you treasure most? Off the cuff, our answers to that question probably range from children or husband to health and safety to peace and joy to the homes we live in. And if we argued that our attachments were of the more noble kind, we’d still have to admit that our calendars, bank accounts and habits indicate the truth. Where our treasure is…that’s where our heart is, too. Today let’s examine what we treasure. How? Let’s simply ask ourselves if we treasure the same things our God values. And then let’s make it a matter of prayer to seek and treasure that which is truly of eternal value.

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. ~ Matthew 6:19-21

  1. Lovely, comfy looking outfit! Yes, we love road trips! I just used my weekender last weekend. My husband & I took a quick trip to Lancaster County, PA. It’s our getaway destination, as we live in Northeast PA. It’s not quite a 3 hour trip from home but I still want comfy clothes. I’m loving that cardigan! Enjoy your style & posts. Especially your Bible verses! I’m currently doing the Turning Point mini-magazine as my daily devotional! Loving it!

    1. Hi Gina, for some reason this comment ended up in my spam folder. ;-( Anyhow, I rescued it! I love visiting Lancaster County. I’ve been there a couple of times, and it’s just gorgeous. I’m so glad you enjoy the blog! Thanks for sharing…and hopefully your comments won’t go to spam anymore!!

  2. We had a blog post on this same idea last year or so. And I even experimented with a skirt for the car ride. It was good for many reasons. But lately I’ve discovered fun compression socks, so I think they will be part of my travel gear from now on!!!

  3. And for those in colder climates don’t forget to pack in your vehicle appropriate outerwear and footwear just in case of a breakdown.

I dress just like you when I travel for longer times. Comfort is key. Thanks for yet another great post.

    1. Absolutely, Catherine. I always pack more warmth in the car than I even think I’ll need. We have stretches of highway out here where there is nothing for miles and miles! I’m glad you enjoyed the post! 🙂
