Hahaha! Catherine I wish I had a better answer for you, but I think it’s just up to the user. I think what differentiates a kimono, wrap, topper or ruana from a cardigan is that they don’t have a button or zip closure while cardigans usually, but not always, do. Also they are usually larger at the should/arm hole, allowing for more drape and give. But, yes I see the words all used interchangeably too. I actually wore this kimono last night and as I was putting it on I thought, “this is really a cardigan!” But of course there are no buttons and it has a roomy fit. I think it’s just really up to the designer though. ?

What a pretty kimono. I have a question, it might be silly but I need to ask someone. What makes a kimono a kimono? Why not a vest or cardigan? I think of a kimono as more of a silky flowy topper, more like a bathrobe but classier. What you are wearing I think of as a short sleeve cardigan. I see kimono in the stores and in ads, more to the way you are using it. Is it just a trendy word? In the end does it really matter what it’s called, no, but I still want to get it clear in my head. If there is a difference I need to know so I am sure that when I order on line I am getting what I think I am ordering.
