Transition into Fall with a Dolman Sleeve Cardigan

Hello, dear readers. Thank you for dropping in today. As the days are shortening and the sky is changing, I’m beginning to get more and more anxious for autumn. But alas, we have many more warm days ahead. So as we get even closer to true autumn on our calendar I begin to turn to transition pieces like the ones I’m featuring on the blog today. I’m sharing a dolman sleeve cardigan over a simple tank top and skinny jeans in the hues of fall.

Dolman Sleeve Cardigan with Colored Jeans

I ordered this dolman sleeve cardigan in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. It’s still available in this pink adobe, a tan heather and black, but only in limited sizes. For reference, I’m wearing a small (I’m 5’8″ and 148 lbs.) and you can see it’s plenty roomy.

If your size isn’t available in the dolman sleeve cardigan I’m wearing here, this short sleeve sweater is similarly priced and available in more sizes. I think a short sleeved or sleeveless cardigan is a nice transitional piece to have in your closet so that you can begin working the luscious layered look we love to wear in cooler months…before it gets cool. This Eileen Fisher short sleeve cardigan is really a summer sweater, but the pretty blue steel shade could easily be worn as you transition into the fall months matched with the right colors.

I’m wearing a squared neck embroidered tank that I have in my closet for the summer from Talbots. (This tank is on big-time sale and still available in most sizes.) I could have easily paired it with my plain navy Pima cotton blend scoop neck tank, but I just happened to pick this one up by accident that day and decided to go with it. The scoop neck tank would fit a little closer to my body, and that might have been nice. But I want you to see that you can use what you have for a look like this.

I featured these same cranberry colored skinny jeans in this previous post, in which I talked more about how to wear colored jeans. Unfortunately they are still sold out. But I’ve pulled several other options to include in the shopping widget below. I especially like these AG skinny jeans in “immersed radiant rhubarb” (they’re a little pricey, but really nice looking and high quality) and these Kut from the Kloth Donna ankle skinny jeans in windsor wine (a lower priced option). Colored jeans in autumn hues are great transition pieces.

My earrings are from Brighton (similar) and my necklace and bracelet are from J.Jill (similar and similar).

My Fiona leather crossbody bag from Fossil is still available. In fact, the pretty gray shade is marked down considerably. I’m carrying the cognac shade.

My rough looking booties are from Nordstrom a couple of years ago. They are indeed supposed to look rough and tumbled, but I probably should have at least polished them up a little before taking these pictures! Still, you’ll see them throughout the winter and they won’t look so very different from this. I just happen to like a weathered bootie. Mine are by Sperry, but this year’s model of the same Juniper Bree bootie doesn’t look quite as worn and weathered, if you’d like to check it out. They are extremely comfortable and easy to wear. Once again, a great transition piece of footwear.

If you do like the weathered bootie, I have a few others featured in the shopping widget below.

I like this outfit for wearing both now (or at least soon!) and later because it features truly autumn colors, textures and layers. The trick is choosing light fabrics that look like fall but wear cool, rich hues and more fall-appropriate footwear (but they don’t have to be closed toe).

Are there any particular transition pieces that you would like for me to style for us all here? I’m open to suggestions. I hope you enjoyed this post and that you’ll share it on Facebook and/or Pinterest. That is always so helpful to me. And when you shop the affiliate links I’ve included you help me earn a little commission at no cost to you. Well, I say no cost to you, but I realize you have given me a chunk of your time today. I want you to know how much I appreciate that.

I’ve linked today’s post to Jo-Lynne Shane’s Fashion Friday Link-Up. Check out the other great styles there. I hope you have a blessed and happy day!

Blessed for My Day

Today I pray for you to have a good and productive day. No, that doesn’t necessarily mean you accomplish everything on your to-do list. But it simply means that you check off the good works on His to-do list. Sometimes when those two lists don’t match up I get a little frustrated. You, too? But that’s part of letting go of the control we so instinctively crave. There is blessing in relinquishing control over our time, though. When we learn that accomplishing God’s tasks for us is so much sweeter and more beneficial than completing our own wish list, we realize the joy of fulfilling our Creator’s purpose for us. May you be blessed today as you do the good works that He has created and equipped you to do.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. ~ Ephesians 2:10

Spread the love
xoxo, Kay

  1. I love the new shapes of our basic pieces like cardigans!!
And I have a prayer request. My husband’s family is dealing with some issues that could possibly break them apart. It’s so sad to see this and i hope for love and understanding…

    1. I’m so sorry to hear about that Jodie. I know that must be tough on you, but also heartbreaking in general. I’ll certainly be praying for you and your family. Yes, love and understanding…and lots of grace all around.
      Praying,
      Kay

  2. I love this outfit!! Do you ever style from JJill? Also, what do you think about kimonos? I remember you styled a beautiful turquoise one. Will they be around next year? Trying to decide if I should look for one in summer sales. Thanks Kay!

    1. Hi Kathy! I do style J.Jill occasionally, and I really love their clothes. I especially enjoy wearing their leggings, in the cooler months, with their tunics. I’ll see if I can fit a J.Jill post in soon.

And yes on the kimonos. I’ve actually styled about four of those now I think. This beautiful silk one from Soft Surroundings, this one from Chico’s and the red and turquoise one from back in the spring. Oh, and this one from my 4th of July post. I definitely think we will continue to see kimonos for a while. In fact, I’ve seen several pretty ones even at Target recently. I’ll try to feature another one soon. I actually have a couple in my closet that I haven’t featured on the blog yet, so I may just show those soon. I’m so glad you like kimonos. I think they’re here to stay indefinitely.
