Spring Undergarment Essentials Refresh

Hello, and welcome to Dressed for My Day. Today we’re going down under! That is, we’re talking undergarments. When I start pulling out my summer dresses, white pants, tank tops and even my summer sneakers, I begin to realize it’s time to refresh some of the undergarments I wear primarily in the warmer months. So I thought today would be a good day for a spring undergarment essentials refresh.

Spring Undergarment Essentials Refresh

Undergarments can make or break an outfit. It’s essential that we wear undergarments that fit, do what they’re supposed to do effectively and stay where they’re supposed to stay…under!

To keep this simple, I’m just sharing with you what works for me. Keep in mind, everybody and every body is different. For instance, I am small in the chest. So I don’t require a bra with any heft or great support. For that reason, I’m not going to tell you what bra to buy, but I’ll simply suggest the types of bras you might want in your drawer this spring and summer.

Here’s what works for me in the spring and summer months.

Spring Undergarment Essentials Refresh 1-11

Panties

#1 – Nude panties for white pants and skirts

I think every gal needs a few pairs of basic nude panties to wear under white garments. And when I say nude, I mean your color of nude. I have been wearing these Jockey Comfies Micro French Cut panties for years, and I still love them. I feel like they stay in place, fit close to the body without binding and also keep you cool and comfie. I also don’t mind telling you that I probably buy mine too big, but I can’t stand underwear that cuts into you. So I wear an 8.

#2 – Light shapewear for everyday skirts and dresses

When I wear everyday skirts and dresses I like to wear lightweight, light control shapewear like these Spanx Thinstincts Girl Shorts. If I keep two pairs in my drawer I seem to have what I need for the couple of times I wear skirts or dresses each week. They prevent panty lines and bulges, but they also prevent thigh chafing. Ahem.

#3 – Heavy shapewear for body hugging dresses

Because I do have a few close fitting dresses that I wear during the warmer months, I like having a pair of these Higher Power Mid-Thigh Shaping Shorts on hand. I generally save these for dresses I wear to church or special occasions. These shaping shorts create a lovely silhouette and make me feel more beautiful in my more “revealing” dresses. I wear a medium.

#4 – No panty-line panties

It doesn’t really matter how you accomplish it, but it is best if you can have a panty-line-free, um, rump. I don’t really like wearing thongs, so I save my Hanky Panky Original Rise Thongs for when I’m wearing my snug fitting jeans and blue jean shorts. Otherwise, I feel like my Jockey Comfies Micro French Cut panties get the job done.

Bras

#5 – Nude everyday bra

I’ve never been one to have bras in pretty colors or patterns. But I think that’s perfectly grand if you do. Still, I think every gal needs at least one nude colored everyday bra that works well under all the white and pastels we wear this time of year. I wear this Push Up Lace Trim Bra. It has a little padding, feels comfortable and does the job. It’s also part of a BOGO 50% off sale right now.

#6 – Wireless comfort bra

Y’all, I’m so tired of wearing a bra. Aren’t you? But I don’t feel completely physically comfortable without one either. So when I’m just working around the house or from my home office, I often opt for this bralette. It’s very comfortable, prevents chafing and creates a more finished, polished look…just in case someone does drop in.

#7 – Convertible strapless bra

Much more often than in the winter, during the spring and summer I do need a convertible bra. I prefer a convertible bra over a true strapless bra simply because it does more jobs for me. I like being able to wear it strapless if I prefer, but then being able to simply convert the straps for wear with a tank top or other shirt that exposes my bra straps. I like this one because it’s comfortable (well, as comfortable as a bra gets!), stays put pretty well and has multiple configurations for the straps.

Socks

#8 – low profile socks

Honestly, I don’t wear socks much during the spring and summer. When I work out and wear my running shoes, I wear these (not pictured) because they are a-maz-ing. But when I’m wearing my leather Keds, my canvas Supergas or my navy Converse, I prefer to wear a low profile sock. A seamless, low-profile cut keeps these breathable-knit socks hidden inside your sneakers, while ribbed arch support and silicone-grip heels make wearing comfortable.

Optional undergarments

Slips seem to be such a thing of the past…until you need one. Amiright?

#9 – Half slip

I’ve discovered that most skirts still need a slip unless they are lined. And even a lining may not keep your skirt from riding up in that annoying way they sometimes do unless you add a simple slip. I haven’t put it on in a while, but I’m pretty sure I wear my half slip with my denim skirt, for instance. I like this one because it’s simple and it has raw cut edges for a no-fuss fit. But I also like this one because it comes in three colors, three lengths and has a slit you can place strategically.

#10 – Camis for modesty

Because so many spring and summer blouses are sheer, it’s good to have a few lightweight camis in various colors. I have several of these from Ann Taylor and prefer them because they are lightweight, fit comfortably and stay put close to the body…without binding.

#11 – Full length slip

Honestly, I don’t have one of these right now. But I’m including full length slips because every once in a while you do put on a dress that requires one. Remember, a slip doesn’t just provide an added layer of modesty, but it can also provide a smooth finish and keep you cooler and more comfortable. I like this one for its simplicity.

Blessed for My Day

Are you weary? I get it. Sometimes we get set on a path that is especially difficult for a season. We wonder if we’ll ever reach our destination…or even a place where we can pause and breathe a little. Some seasons take more out of us than others.

Today let me encourage you to press on. Set your eyes on Jesus, who finished His course by keeping His eyes on the joy that lay before Him. Don’t see much joy? It’s ahead, dear friend. Jesus found His joy in completing the task given to Him by His Father, paying the horrible price for our redemption. We can find joy in completing the tasks given us this day by the Father, too. Trust that there is meaning and purpose in what He has called you to. And trust that He will give you the resources to finish well.

Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us, keeping our eyes on Jesus, the source and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that lay before Him endured a cross and despised the shame and has sat down at the right hand of God’s throne. ~ Hebrews 12:1b-2

  1. Do you find #3 to slip down? I am looking for something to smooth my middle, but I have found that many I have tried always start to slip down or fold over when I am sitting for awhile. I have recently started wearing some shapewear camisole type tops, and these do seem to do the trick, but they flatten my chest (not always a bad thing since I have a larger chest) since I don’t need a bra with them. Thanks.

    1. Hi Arna, I wear a Spanx cami that is cut out in the bust because I didn’t like the look of being squished by the regular cami I tried first. Hope that helps:)

  2. Hi Kay! I need to update some of my undies so this post was helpful. I’m wondering about the comfort of #3. Does it roll down? Also I have yet to find a pair of no-show socks that doesn’t end up in the toe of my shoe!! Do these actually stay on your feet? Thanks for the Blessed For My Day.

    1. The Spanx shorts do not fold or slip down for me. I wear a pretty snug fit. I really don’t notice them once I get them on. I’ve only worn the socks a few times in the past two weeks, but so far they are great. I haven’t washed them yet, but I have high hopes. They have pretty good reviews on the sale page and I’ve had people personally recommend them to me, too. I really think they’re going to work. Fingers crossed ?.

  3. Much needed info and helpful post. As an older lady (that’s me!) I realize how important under garments can be. You have given me new options. Thanks.

  4. I really like Soma’s vanishing edge panties. I have worn them all winter long with sweater dresses and they really don’t show and are very comfortable. Love them! Thanks for the info and reminder to think about this stuff as warmer weather approaches. 🙂

  5. I just recently purchased a wrap around blouse that does not have a fastener. As it’s a summer blouse I don’t want to wear a camisole under as that would defeat the whole process. What are my bra options for modesty?

    1. Hi Karen, So it depends on which way you want to go with that. If you want to or don’t mind showing a bit of lace underneath (and if that feels appropriate with that particular blouse) you can wear one of the lace bralettes that are meant to peek above the collar a bit: https://shopstyle.it/l/1Cf1
But if you’d prefer no undergarment show and you’re okay with the plunge line, you could wear a bra that plunges in the front: https://shopstyle.it/l/1Cgk
Third option, you could attach a fastener or have someone do so, if that makes you feel better.
Fourth option, you can use some fashion tape to keep the blouse in place. I’ve heard good things about this one: https://shopstyle.it/l/1Cg9

Hope that helps, Karen. Have a blessed and lovely day!

  6. Yep. As you age, undergarments get more and more important to holding it all together! I have found a much less expensive version of # 2 above – at Walmart of all places!! Jockey brand slip shorts. I love to wear them under dress pants so there’s no panty line, and I look much smoother.

  7. Thanks for this post. I ordered the socks and am eager to try them, especially since they come in a larger size.

    1. Great! I hope they work for you. I have the larger size, too. They are not thick socks. But I think that’s because they are meant to be worn under fashion sneakers and loafers, not running shoes.

  8. The shapewear cami I wear is called a torsette. It has a U-shape that goes under the bra. I can’t remember where I bought it – maybe Kohls
