Maybe I watched too many Doris Day movies, but I love a soft, pretty sweater paired with a classic pencil skirt. Throw in a pair of neutral pumps and a clutch bag and you’ve got me singing Que Será, Será! That’s why today I’m tickled pink to be sharing this updated skirt and cashmere sweater in the soft shades of fall.

The only thing I might love better than a cashmere sweater paired with pretty plaid slacks (like in this post) is a cashmere sweater worn over a simple skirt. This classic duo reminds me of the Leonardo da Vinci quote I posted in my Instagram feed yesterday: “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.”

Both the skirt and sweater, as well as my favorite gold layering necklace, are from Talbots. And the good news is that Talbots extended their Friends & Family discounts through Wednesday, October 31, with one new bonus. Now you get 40% off one regular price item and 30% off everything else with code TREAT40. Yay!

And by the way, this additional discount is not mentioned on their website, last I checked. I guess they’ve just made email subscribers aware of this bonus. Now aren’t you glad you check in here first? So be sure to use the TREAT40 code and not the FRIENDS30.

I’m wearing Talbots’ Audrey Cashmere sweater in Fall Fuchsia Heather. I have the medium simply because my shoulders are broad, so I often go with a medium in similar pullovers.

I love the muted fall tones in this Glen Plaid pencil skirt: brown and sugar coral. This soft, classic skirt would also work wonderful with an ivory blouse, a camel cashmere sweater or this fall fuchsia turtleneck. And if you want to add a little sparkle to this otherwise traditional look, you could pair it with this gold sparkle turtleneck.

You know I don’t mind spending a little more for wellmade, classic clothes, but I also like to balance things out by spending less when possible. That’s why I’m loving these New Day sling back nude heels from Target. They still look classic and tailored, but the price is so much better than comparable shoes elsewhere. These tortoise heels from Talbots would also look smart with this ensemble. Or you could go with these suede kitten heels in pomegranate.

I finished my outfit with my favorite gold layering necklace, these gold drop earrings I got from Rocksbox and my leopard foldover clutch – for a modern twist! I also think these simple gold hoop earrings would be an even more classic accent.

Blessed for My Day

It occurred to me recently that if I truly trust God’s sovereignty and goodness, the only prayer I really ever need to pray is simply, “Thank you.” Sure, when we ask God to provide for us financially or materially, we acknowledge our dependence on Him. And when we ask Him to heal our loved one, we confess that He is indeed the Great Physician. But sometimes my prayers become out of balance as I focus on what I don’t have, what I need, what I yearn for and what I think should happen. To bring my conversation with God back into a holy balance I have begun simply acknowledging His generosity, His faithfulness, His ability and His activity in my life by thanking Him for what He has done, what He is doing and what He has yet to do. Not only does this kind of praying change my words and my tone, but it changes my heart. It restores my faith, gives me courage to press on and provides peace as I “let go and let God.”

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. ~ 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

  1. Your outfit is truly classic and sophisticated, fresh. Beautiful! What I loved most was your thoughts on prayer. I, too, need to focus more on thankfulness and simply delighting in who God is, delighting in the Giver, not only his gifts. Thank you for sharing.

    1. Exactly, Deanna. He is all sufficient and He is such a good provider. It just struck me to consider how I would feel if my children, especially when they were young and their dad and I were meeting every need, just constantly came to us asking for things that we were already providing! I would appreciate their dependency, but I would hope for their trust. Gratitude expresses trust! Thanks for reading and commenting today!

    1. Oh, I’m so glad Bev. Have a blessed and beautiful day. We indeed have so much to be thankful for. Indeed, God is always at work!

  2. That sweater’s a beautiful color for you and I love the plaid skirt. I’m loving all the plaid this year. Saw your blog on #fashionFriday
