How to Style Colored Jeans this Fall

Welcome to Dressed for My Day! I’m so glad you’re here. Yes, it’s only the first full week in August, but I have to admit that I have autumn on my mind more and more. Blame it on that blasted Nordstrom sale! But ever since I began trying on the pieces I ordered, I’ve been getting excited about fall. So today I want to share with you a pair of colored jeans that I had every intention of photographing and then promptly returning, but…

Honestly, I haven’t decided what to do about these jeans. So many factors at play. I’ve already packed up and returned three boxes full of purchases (remember, I over-ordered intentionally), but I have these sitting in my guest bedroom with the tags still on them so I can decide what to do. Hmm.

The older I get the more I’m a little hesitant to buy colored jeans. Truth is I’ve had some that I think back on with regrets now. Think bubble gum pink! But jeans in non traditional colors seem to be here to stay, so when I spotted these rich cranberry colored jeans in the Nordstrom sale I decided to go for it. (Unfortunately, when I started writing this post they had these in stock, and now they don’t. But the listing is still up, so maybe they will replenish them.)

So what’s the trick to wearing colored jeans? Basically you just flip the color blocks. Whereas you might normally wear neutral colored jeans – think blue, black, gray or white – with a “color” on top, now you’re putting the “color” in your pants so you wear a more neutral colored top. And by neutral, again, I mean white, beige, brown, black, navy, gray, etc.

I ordered this navy striped t-shirt early on in the Nordstrom sale and it quickly disappeared. But it’s back in stock now. Fishy, really. At any rate, it’s not a bad price even at regular price. And I love it with these cranberry jeans.

Yes, you can still wear prints and patterns with colored jeans. You can even throw in some animal print because you actually treat animal print as a solid. That’s why I love the leopard print flats with this ensemble.

I thought I’d share a few other outfits that I put together with colored denim jeans. I’ve tried to provide options in different price points. I wish I had included some print tops in these examples, but alas I didn’t. But hopefully these will at least spark some ideas about how to combine the colored jeans with a flattering neutral up top.

What colored jean do you like best in the selections above? Which is your favorite combo?

Most of the jeans featured above come in several other great colors as well: colors like ocean wave, windsor wine, red poppy and sulfur pale wisteria.

I finished my outfit off with this dreamy circle cardigan by Barefoot Dreams. It is crazy soft. And it’s available in some other swoony colors as well. I can wear these pants with gray, beige or black, too, but I love the cranberry/navy combination.

So what about you? Do you have a pair of colored jeans in your closet that you enjoy wearing, either for summer or fall/winter? I’d love to know.

Blessed for My Day

Today may you think before you speak. That’s not always easy, is it? I’m sometimes hasty to throw in my two cents when I should be measuring my words more carefully instead. The Bible teaches us that words spoken rashly can do serious damage, and we’ve all seen that proven true. But we also learn in Proverbs that the wise person knows how to use her words in a way that can actually heal those wounds that once seemed permanent. Have you experienced the healing balm of someone’s words soothing the wounds in your heart? Indeed, our words are powerful. Lord, help us today to speak words of life today and every day.

There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts,
but the tongue of the wise brings healing. ~ Proverbs 12:18

Spread the love
xoxo, Kay

  1. I love colored jeans! This is a great post! Too bad the cranberry are sold out, but I’m not ready yet for fall shopping, just getting ideas through your blog..so thank you bunches!!

  2. Personally, I love the colored jeans and I have every shade of them you’ve shared today in my closet. It’s a refreshing change from denim all of the time. Appreciate the different looks you’ve given us today too….on what to pair with the colored jeans. I’m a gal who loves color anyway. I just wish more women would start wearing the colored jeans. What’s NOT to love about them? Love your posts Kay. You’re beautiful inside and out!

    1. Wow, a real colored jeans gal! I think that’s wonderful and inspiring. Thanks for the affirmation Sondra. That means a lot to me. ?

  3. I’ve been wearing a few colors of jeans this summer and am looking forward to snagging some for the fall. I love the plum color!

Thanks for the Blessed for my Day. A great reminder to think before we speak!

    1. Yes, it’s amazing how those Blessed for My Days work. Right after I write something like that, I’m challenged in that very area. Just after writing that, I snapped at my husband about something and said things I immediately regretted. Ugh! But I”m trying to be more conscious of my words as a result. ?

  4. I like the AG pale wisteria color. I wear the Indigo or Chambray colors, but I think for color I would go to a blush with white t-shirt. Then I let me necklace fill in the color. I guess colored jeans are too complicated for me. LOL

    1. Yes, I like the pale wisteria and blush colors, too. I think the soft colors are just as pretty as the bolder ones. And a blue chambray shirt would look really pretty with soft colored jeans, too. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Aimee. 🙂

  5. I do really like your jeans – such a pretty shade of red and perfect for fall. I have some emerald green jeans in my wardrobe for a change this year.

    1. Yes, aren’t they a pretty color? Not wine or burgandy, but not really cherry red either. Very much the color of cranberries, really. I bet those green jeans are beautiful, too. Thanks for leaving a comment, Alison! 🙂

  6. I remember when red jeans were first big about 6 years ago. And I was working (I’m a retired dentist) and I was talking to one of my patients. We were discussing the red jeans and I said I thought I was too old for them. And she looked at me and said “never”. Now that I’m blogging, I totally believe her. Even the bubble gum colored ones!! They are fun and life should be fun!!
And the leopard shoes?? Definitely one of my faves Kay!!

    1. Yeah, after I wrote what I did about the bubblegum pink jeans, I thought better about that. I actually enjoyed wearing those at the time! I’m with you, I think these leopard print shoes are keepers. Thanks for dropping in, Jodie! ?
