5 Fun Accessory Trends to Try this Fall

Hello and welcome to Dressed for My Day. As the temperatures cool and the shadows begin to shift, we continue to prepare our wardrobes for fall. I thought it might be nice to turn our minds to accessories today. I’m sharing 5 fun accessory trends you might want to try this fall.

The beauty of incorporating fashion trends into your wardrobe through accessories is that it’s less of a commitment. Not only can you usually (but not always) buy accessories for less, but they take up less real estate on your body. So if you decide those earrings just aren’t working for you or that scarf feels goofy, you can just toss it mid-day. Ha!

Then again, accessorizing ought to be fun. So this is a great area to take some risks, wear something a little different from what the others gals in your book club are wearing and express yourself.

Let’s look at five current trends – some of them fairly new – that might be fun to try this fall. From my title graphic, you may have already guessed my first one.

Belt Bags

Belt bags have been trending for a few years now, but I’ve been hesitant to join the party. I think I may have worked up the courage to join the dance though.

I think the hesitancy most gals feel about belt bags is that they remind us of the fanny packs many of us wore in the 90s. And if we wore it before we’re not supposed to wear it again, right? Wrong!

But I’ve discovered a few secrets that might make your attempt to wear a belt bag stylishly more successful.

  • While you’ll find models that look just like the wide, puffy fanny packs many of us wore before, you’ll look more modern sporting a sleek, simple pouch like the one pictured above.
  • If you just want to quietly dip your toe in the water with this trend, purchase a bag in a neutral color of leather for the safest option.
  • I rarely see anyone wearing their belt bag through the belt loops of their pants, so you don’t need to belt your jeans with it unless you just want to.
  • You can wear it a variety of ways – like a crossbody, over one shoulder, around your waist but under your jacket or coat, or cinching your sweater or jacket.
  • You can wear a belt bag and carry another bag at the same time. Oh yes you can! So you don’t have to worry about not having room for your “stuff!”

Here are a few belt bags to consider at a variety of price points and style grades. I’m planning to buy one and share styling ideas soon.

Vintage Inspired Scarves

Scarves have been in style, and perhaps never go out of style. But last year saw a resurgence of the neck scarf, and they’re still in vogue. This year it’s stylish to top off your outfit with a vintage inspired scarf. In fact, if you happen to have scarves from much earlier decades that are still in good condition, pull them out and wear them!

In the shopping widget below I’ve provided a selection of scarves in a full range of price points. In fact, you’ll find one or two very pricey ones. Hey, if you want to order them, great! But I really just included them so you could see some great examples of vintage inspired designs.

Hats

This season the best way to cap off a great outfit is with a stylish hat!

Fall Accessories Hats

I bought a fedora in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale and can’t wait to wear it soon. But you’ll also see ranchers, bucket hats, berets, beanies and engineer or fisherman caps trending, too.

To figure out your hat size, just measure the circumference of your head and use the size guide provided at the website.

By the way, the secret to wearing a hat and looking great in it is simply to own it. Wear it with confidence! I’ll be sharing styling tips for wearing fedoras and maybe another hat style or two later.

Chain Jewelry

Chunky chain jewelry is trending even more than last year. Even the more delicate jewelry is available in chunky chain versions. You’ll see what I mean in the shopping widget below. Plus, you’ll see the chain theme carried out in necklaces, bracelets and earrings, as well as rings.

Belt It!

Not only are belt bags trending, but so are belts in general. This is the year of cinching it! Whether you wear your belt through the loops in your pants or belt your cardigan or blazer, you’ll want a good belt or two. And by good I simply mean current.

So you could wear a leather belt, leopard print belt, snake embossed belt or croc embossed belt. But definitely learn to belt it!

Personally, I think your belt is a great place to add the textures of animal prints or embossing. But if you wear animal print elsewhere in your look, you might prefer to keep your belt classic brown or black. I have some of all of those in the shopping widget below.

Blessed for My Day

Are you familiar with Proverbs 22:6, shown below? I hate to tell you this, but that’s not a biblical promise. It’s a precept, a proverb. Which simply means that it’s generally true that if you do the hard work of training up your child with biblical principles those teachings will stick with him or her throughout their life. But it’s no guarantee. Why not? Because even your well trained child has a personal will. They get to make their own choices about following Jesus…or not.

It’s hard when your child doesn’t continue on the path you so carefully started him or her on. What can you do when they depart from that path? First, you pray for them daily. God absolutely does still love your child and those truths you taught him are planted deep in his heart. Pray for those precepts to rise to the surface and penetrate his heart. Second, you keep loving that child and staying graciously involved in her life. Earn the invitation to speak into her life by treating her with respect, grace, genuine interest and love. Finally, you let God do the hard work of conviction and change. You cannot do those things. Trust Him and believe He loves your child even more than you do.

Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. ~ Proverbs 22:6

  1. Thank you Kay for your encouraging words in Blessed for My Day. They are the exact words I needed to read this morning!

  2. Hi Kay, Thanks for updating the latest trends for accessories. It would be so helpful if you did a post about how to tie and style some of the different kinds of scarves in your shopping widget. I loved them but I’m not sure how to wear them.

  3. I agree with Katie, would love to see a scarf post! ?
And the belt bags are really cute that resemble a small purse, preferably leather, and not the pouchy Fanny packs from once upon a time!
